PurposeofPublic Notice
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is soliciting comments on the request to renew a ground water discharge permit as described below.The ground water discharge permit
is issued by the Director of the Division of Water Quality under authority of the Utah Water Quality Act, Section 19-5-106(g) Utah Code Ann. 1953, as amended and Utah Administrative
Code R317-6.Under Section 19-1-301.5, effective May 8, 2012, a person who wishes to challengeaPermit Order mayonlyraiseanissueor argument duringanadjudicatoryproceedingthat wasraisedduring
the public comment period and was supported with sufficient information or documentation to enable the Director to fully consider the substance and significance of the issue. Utah Code

SouthJordan,Utah84095FacilityLocation:The facility is an approximately 10,000-acre impoundment adjoining the town of Magna,Utah to the north.
Kennecott Utah Copper has requested renewal and modification of the ground water discharge permit UGW350011 for the continued placement and disposal of tailings from copper ore mined
in the Bingham Canyon Mine.The mine is located in the Oquirrh Mountains approximately 10 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah.The mine generates approximately 200,000 tons per day
of tailings and other permitted waste streams. The proposed renewed permit includes a modification to include the East Tailings Expansion. The East Tailings Expansion will be located
east of the southeast corner of the existing impoundment, north of highway 201 and west of 8000 west. The expansion is to be constructed to similar engineering design and containment
specifications of the north impoundment with drains and a toe ditch. The expansion also serves the purpose of stabilizing the southeast corner of the southern tailings impoundment geotechnically.

Public comments are invited any time prior toWednesday, August28, 2024. Written comments may be directed to the Division of Water Quality, P.O. Box 144870, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-4870.
All comments received prior to close of business Wednesday, August28, 2024,will be considered in the formulation of final determinations to be imposed on the permit. A public hearing
may be held if written requests are received within the first 15 days of this public comment period that demonstrate significant public interest and substantive issues exist to warrant
holding a hearing
