PurposeofPublic Notice
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is soliciting comments on the request to renew a ground water discharge permit as described below.The ground water discharge permit
is issued by the Director of the Division of Water Quality under authority of the Utah Water Quality Act, Section 19-5-106(g) Utah Code Ann. 1953, as amended and Utah Administrative
Code R317-6.Under Section 19-1-301.5, effective May 8, 2012, a person who wishes to challengeaPermit Order mayonlyraiseanissueor argument duringanadjudicatoryproceedingthat wasraisedduring
the public comment period and was supported with sufficient information or documentation to enable the Director to fully consider the substance and significance of the issue. Utah Code

Kennecott Barneys Canyon Mining Company has requested renewal of the ground water discharge permit UGW350001 to cover closure activities for the Barneys Canyon Mine.The mine is located
in the Oquirrh Mountains approximately 10 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah.The renewed permit will cover Barneys Canyon Mine as described in the draft permit, statement of basis
and permit appendices.Active mining operations are no longer being conducted at the site, which is in the process of site closure.Closure activities include removal of the process ponds,
processing plant and ancillary facilities, re-contouring the slopes of the leach pads, and placing top soil cover on the leach pads to accommodate re-vegetation.Long-term ground water
monitoring will continue at the site during closure activities as well as post-closure to verify that there is no intentional direct discharge to waters of the State.
