farmers

Spills must be cleaned up immediately.
Requirements for large
farmers (businesses)
Must follow the prohibition and the
cleanup requirements.
Can self-transport used oil in quantities
of 55 gallons or less to a type B or C
used oil collection center or an
aggregation point owned by the farmer.
In surface impoundments or waste piles.
As a dust suppressant, weed
suppressant, or for road oiling or other
similar use.
On the ground.
By mixing it with solid or hazardous waste
for disposal.
As solid waste, except for the disposal of
hazardous used oil as authorized under
the Hazardous Waste Rules.
In sewer and drainage systems, septic
tanks, surface or ground waters,
watercourses, or any body of water.
Must follow the standards for used oil
generators under Utah Administrative
Code R315-15 and other applicable
requirements.
Must follow the prohibition and the
cleanup requirements.

Stop the spill, contain it, clean it up, and dispose of it properly.
If the spill is more than 25 gallons or are smaller releases that pose a potential threat to human
health or the environment:
Call the Department of Environmental Quality’s 24-hour Spill Line: 801-536-4123
Within 15 days after the spill, submit a written report with information about the incident,
cleanup, and disposal of related waste.

Self-transport used oil in quantities
of 55 gallons or less to a used oil
collection center (UOCC) or an
aggregation point owned by the
farmer. Please check with the UOCC
to see if the quantity and type of
used oil is accepted at that location.

Ship off used oil using a Utah

Store self-generated used oil.
Receive used oil from another
person.
For used oil quantities greater than
55 gallons, transport to and from

The laws that apply to farms and dairies depend on how much used oil is generated
on average per month in a calendar year:
Any oil, refined from crude or
synthetic oil, that has been used
becomes used oil.
Common used oils include: engine
oil, hydraulic oil, transmission and
brake fluids, compressor oils, and
lubricating greases.
Expired, unused oil is waste oil, and
can be returned to the vendor or
manufacturer.
