PARTNERS Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lewiston City Department of Public Works ACCOMPLISHMENTS Lewiston City demolished the abandoned gasoline service station building which had become a community eyesore as well as a safety and fire hazard. UDEQ performed extensive subsurface investigations in April and June 2008 and collected numerous soil and groundwater samples using federal EPA grant monies to determine the need for further investigations, cleanup activities or a risk-based site closure. During the initial subsurface investigation, four abandoned underground storage tanks were found at the site and subsequently removed from the property in October 2008. Lewiston City conducted cleanup by removing over 85 cubic yards of soil following the UST removal in October 2008. The underutilized property was able to undergo the necessary property transactions, allowing for the transfer of ownership to Lewiston City for revitalization efforts to begin. This unique environmental partnership was a cost-effective approach that helped convert a blighted and underutilized property into a sustainable and beneficial redevelopment opportunity as a new city park for the residents of Lewiston to enjoy.
