Kennecott South Zone – In Progress
®The Division Drinking Water issued a
Drinking Water Systems permit for the
Zone A RO Plant; May 26, 2006.
®The State Trustee executed a 60%
reduction of the Zone A ILC’s face
value, pursuant to the terms of Section
III of the Three Party Agreement; July
26, 2006.
Kennecott South Zone – In Progress
®A South Zone TRC meeting was held
on June 8, 2006. A Presentation on the
2005 monitoring activities at Operable
Unit (OU) #2 – SWJV Ground Water
Plumes was provided.
®Source controls will continue under
existing state permits, renewed per the
program rules.

®Negotiations will continue to develop a
final CERCLA remedial design consent
decree for OU #2; Summer 2006.
®Monitoring will continue to assess the
reaction of the Zone A sulfate and acid
plumes to the CERCLA and NRD
response actions; 2006/2007.
®Parameters to be monitored include: water
quality, levels, and land subsidence

® Kennecott will continue to perform operation
and maintenance activities at OU #2;
2006/2007.
® DERR & EPA will evaluate and render a
construction completion determination for
Kennecott’s CERCLA response work at OU
#2; Fall 2006.
® DERR will complete an inspection report on
constructed remedial components; Summer
2006.
® Kennecott will submit a formal request for
completion determination; Summer/Fall 2006.

®Kennecott will continue to provide
disposal space for impacted soils
excavated in the Herriman area, as
agreed to in the CERCLA consent
decree for OU #3 – Butterfield Creek,
Butterfield Canyon, Herriman;
2006/2007.
®DERR and Kennecott will complete a
joint FiveYear Review schedule
proposal and submit it to EPA;
Summer/Fall 2006.
Kennecott South Zone Planned
® The negotiating parties will lodge a remedial
design consent decree for OU #2 with the
Federal District Court and EPA/DEQ will
announce a public comment period; ≈ Fall
2006.
® Kennecott will notify the NRD Trustee on
treated water volumes as part of the formal
request to reduce the Zone A ILC by 15%; on
each anniversary of the Zone A Completion
Date, for next five years.

®Kennecott will submit an annual
remedial progress report for monitoring
activities at OU #2; 2005 report ≈ Fall
2006.
®DERR and EPA will periodically
comment on the to KUCC annual
remedial progress reports for OU #2;
after review of submitted report.

® Kennecott will periodically copy DERR and
EPA on annual compliance reports for
permits; per the permit schedule.
®The GWPP report for Bingham Canyon
permit will document the volume of
impacted soil delivered to the Bluewater
repository.
® DERR will initiate an investigation into the
operational history of the historic facility,
BinghamMagna Ditch, and determine a
regulatory response; Summer/Fall 2006.

® Kennecott
completed the
demolition of
certain
structures and
installed an
interim cap at
the
Precipitation
Plant located
west of
Copperton;
January 2006.

continue to
demolish certain
structures and
characterize the
soils at the
Bonneville
Crushing and
Grinding facility.

monitored the
North Zone
Wetlands
(Eastside and
Garfield) for
the 2006
sampling
season; June
2006.

® A North Zone TRC meeting was held on
January 19, 2006. Monitoring results for the
North Zone Wetlands 2005 sampling season
were presented and discussed.
® Source controls will continue under existing
state permits, renewed per the program rules.
®GWPP permit for MTI was renewed Fall
2005.
®UPDES permit for MTI is planned for
renewal this Summer 2006.
® Public comment period ended July 25, 2006.
Kennecott North Zone – Planned
® DERR will perform a final inspection of the
interim cap constructed at the Precipitation
Plant and render a completion determination;
Fall 2006.
® Kennecott will continue demolition activities at
the Bonneville C&G facility to address
remaining concrete and structural debris, as
well as backfill certain areas; Fall/Winter
2006/2007.
® DERR w ill provide oversight during work.

®Kennecott will characterize the soils
located at the Bonneville C&G facility
once demolition work is completed;
Spring 2007.
®Kennecott will provide a report on the
North Zone Wetlands monitoring activity
for 2006 and present it to the North
Zone TRC; ≈ Winter 2007.

®A RDRA work plan for remedial
activities selected under the North Zone
ROD (Sept. 2002) will be prepared and
reviewed; no time frame set yet.
®The EPA, DEQ and Kennecott will
initiate negotiations on a CERCLA
remedial design consent decree for the
operable units listed in the North Zone
ROD; no time frame set yet.
