UG370004 (GWDP): Findings and Closeout
Dear Ms. Weinel:
On April 16, 2015, Division of Radiation Control (DRC) staff conducted a field inspection of the
physical facilities involved in tailings and waste disposal at the White Mesa Mill. The inspection
focused on the physical health and performance of the facilities with respect to the Discharge
Minimization Technology Plan and the approved implementation of best available technology at
the site.
The facilities appeared to be operating within expected parameters. Personnel involved in routine
inspections relative to the Discharge Minimization Technology Plan and the implemented best
available technologies seem knowledgeable of the requirements, and more importantly, of the
principles behind the requirements.
The forms approved on April 7, 2015 (Revision 12.3 of the DMT Plan) should have been used;
however, the field crews used the Revision 12.2 forms. The newer revision omits Roberts Pond;
thus, the older forms did not result in loss of quality. Please see that future inspections use up-to-
date forms and procedures.
DRC inspectors suggested to the field crew that activating manual switches on leak detection
systems once each month, and checking to see that the pump engaged and that the monitoring
equipment responded appropriately, may help identify equipment failures early - prior to the need
to engage them for fluid level control.
