Dear Ms. Tischler:
SUBJECT: June 9, 2011 DUSA Letter Response to DRC Letter of May 24, 2011; April 19, 2011
DUSA Letter; November 15, 2010 Annual Technical Evaluation of the White Mesa Mill
Tailings Managemem System [The Annual Technical Evaluation Report (ATER)];
Report Approval and Close-out.
We received and have reviewed the subject DUSA response letter dated June 9, 2011. This letter provides
the DUSA response to our letter of May 24, 2011. These documents pertain to the removal of "the tree-
like plants on the Cell 2 interim cover."
The June 9, 2011 DUSA letter provided 18 legible photos documenting the process for removal of the tree
like plants and final removal, as requested. You explained that the DUSA process used to remove the tree-
like plants involves four steps. These steps include cutting, poisoning, tap root death, and then final
removal. You also acknowledged that the statement in the DUSA April 19, 2011 letter, "that the trees had
been removed," was not sufficiently clear in explaining the complete removal process is a longer-term
effort than the initial cutting and poisoning. Also that, "On June 9, 2011, Denison used the Mill's dozer to
cut or uproot the visible remaining growth." The record of this removal work will be included in the next
ATER, due November 15, 2011.
DUSA should now modify their SOPs to include:
1. Annual removal of tree-like plants from covered tailings cells, and
2. The above four-step tree removal process as an SOP for tree-like plant removal.
