The Mill was in abeyant operations for the above period and these systems were not operating. This ffirmation would normally be reported in Table I, therefore no data was collectedduring this period. Environmental Radiologica_l and Effluent Monitoring Data 2.1 Environmental Radon Radon 222 flttx was not directly measured, because IUSA's license allows IUSA to demonstrate conformance to the limits and requirements of 10 CFR 20.1302 (b) (1) by rse conputations, methods, and programs (i,e. 'MILDos - A computer program for Calculating Environmental Radiation Doses from Uranium Recovery Operations"). ))Direct Radiation Gamma exposure rates were determined for the third and fourth quarters of 200 l utilizing passive integrating devices. dosimeters were located at each high volume air sampling station: BHV:1, gi1.-2, BHV-3, BHV-4 and BIIV-S. Data from location BlfV-3 are used as a background sample for direct radiation because of its remoteness to the plant mill site (approximately 3.5 miles distant). The gamma exposure radiation results from thislocation are subtracted from results of other sample locations. Table II illustrates gamna exposure rate measurements for the third and fourth quarters of 2001 after a background correction has been applied to locations Blfv-l, BHV-2, BIIV-4 andBHV-5. A comparison of this data to the average gamma exposure rate value in mRem/quarter at each location since 1988, indicates no increased trend in direct radiation at any location. 2.3 Vegetation Vegetation sanples are collected at tlrree (3) locations around the mill periphery. The sampling locations are northeast, northwest and southwest of the mill facility. Vegetation samples are collected during early spring, late spring and fall (growth seasons). Vegetation sample results are presented in Table III. A review ofthis data compared with results of several previous years indicate no increased concentratiorr of&a-226 or Pb-210 in vegetation growth. Laboratory results are attached. Graphical representations of the vegetation sampling data for the White Mesa Mill vegetation sarnpling locatiors since inception are included with this report. Note that all values that are reported below LLD values are not plotted on these graphs. The basis for this approach is that a value reported to be below LLD is by definitionnot quantifiable. 2.4 )\ 3.0 I T t I t I I I T I I T I t t I I Environmental Air Monitoring The environmental air particulate monitoring pro$am is conducted at the White Mesa Mill utilizing four high volume continuous air sampling stations located as indicated in Figure 1.0 attached. High volume air sample station BHV-3 is no longer utilized to collect air particulate data, with U.S. N.R.C. approval for backgrotmd correctional application to other mnpling locatiors, because zufficient data has been accumulated at B[W-3 to make appropriate background corrections to the other sample location data. The results of radionuclide concentrations for air sampling locations BHV-I, BHV-2 (nemest residence) Blrv4 and BHV-5 are presented in Table IV. A review of the inforrnation, comparing results to those from previous years indicate no potential upward trends in radionuclide at any location. Laboratory results are attached. Graphical representations of the air sampling data for the White Mesa Mill air sampling locations since inception are included with this report. Note that all values that are reported below LLD values are not plotted on these graphs. .The basis for this approach is that a value reported to be below LLD is by definition not quantifiable. Ground W?ter Monitoring The ground water monitoring program sanple rezuhs for the third and fourth quarters of2001 are presented in Table V. Quality Control samples and Quality Assurance samples are indicated on the respective quarterly results. An analysis and discussion of this information is attached as Attachment I. Table V. 2.6 Surface Water Monitoring Surface water samples were collected for Cottonwood Creek and are presented in Table VI. The results and samples of surface water samples for Westwater Creek were collected and reported in fust half of 2001. No obvious analyte trend is evident from comparison of previous data for Cottonwood surface water collection or for westwater creek sediment sanrples. Laboratory results are attached. 2.7 Soil Sampling Annual soil samples were collected in August 2001 and the results are reported in Table VIII. No obvious analyte trend is evident fromcomparison ofprevious data for samples. Laboratory results are attached. Meteorological Data McVehil-Monnet,Inc-, will prepare the White Mesa Mill Semi-annual Meteorological Monitoring Report for the period of July l, 2a0l through December 31, 2001. I i372fi0nilIr, GROUNDWATER STATISTICAL AI\ALYSIS BY SI{EWHART-C T]S T]M ME THOD DECEMBER 31, 2001 The NRC February, 1992 Environmental Assessment states that the Mill will use the Shewhart Cusum control chart techlique for interpretation of quarterly groundwater data. Copies of each of the current control chart plots for the White Mesa Mill groundwater point of compliance quarterly monitoring data are provided in this section. These plots include data from the most recent quarlerly point of compliance sampling event in December 2001. The control charl method is a parametric test. The underlying assumption in this method is that the charts and control limits be developed based on a parameter that has a normal distribution. ln some cases, the parameter which exhibits a normal distribution is the measured concentration of an analfle. In some cases, the parameter is a function of the measured concentration, such as 1og, square root or other power of the concentration. The parameters used for white Mesa Mili data include measured concentration, 1og of concentration, or square root (0.5 power) of concentration, as appropriate, to generate a new control chart, or a graphic output that can be compared to an existing controI charl. A summary interpretation of the control charts for this monitoring period is provided below.
