Gas Stack Sampling
No gas stack samples were collected on any White Mesa Mill effluent gas pollution control
systems for the period July l, 2000 through December 31,2000. The Mill was in abeyant
operations for the above period and these systems were not operating. This information
would normally be reported in Table I, however no data was collected during this period.
Environmental Radiological and Effluent Monitoring Data
2.1 Environmental Radon
Radon 222 flux was not directly measured, because fUSA's license allows IUIJA to
demonstrate conformance to the limits and requirements of l0 CFR 20.1302 (b) (l)
by use of computational methods and programs O{ILDOS modeling).
2.2 Direct Radiation
Gamma exposure rates were determined for the third and fourth quarters of 2000
utilizing passive integrating devices. Thermoluminescent dosimeters were localed at
each high volume air sampling station: Bfry-I, BIfV-2, BHV-3, BIIV-4 and BIIV-5.
The location BHV-3 is used as a background sample for direct radiation because of
its remoteness to the plant mill site (approximately 3.5 miles distant). The gzmma
exposure radiation results from this location are subtracted from results of other
sample locations. Table II illustrates gamma exposure rate measurements fcrr the
second and third quarters of2000 after a background correction has been applied to
locations BHV-I, BHV-2, BHV-4 and BHV-5" A comparison of this data to the
average gamma exposure rate value in mRem/quarter at each location since [988,
indicates no increased trend in direct radiation at any location.
2.3 Vegetation
Vegetation samples are collected at three (3) locations around the mill periphery. The
sampling locations are northeast, northwest and southwest of the mill facility.
Vegetation samples are collected during early spring, late spring and fall (growth
seasons). Vegetation sample results are presented in Table III. A review of thir; data
compared with results of several previous years indicate no increased concentration
of Ra-226 or Pb-210 in vegetation growth. Laboratory results are attached.
Graphical representations of the vegetation sampling data for the White Mesa Mill
vegetation sampling locations since inception are included with this report. Note that
all values that are reported below LLD values are not plotted on these graphs. The
basis for this approach is that a value reported to be below LLD is by definition not
quantifiable.

The environmental air particulate monitoring program is conducted at the White Mesa
Mill utilizing four high volume continuous air sampling stations located as indicated
in Figure 1.0 attached. High volume air sample station BHV-3 is no longer utilized
to collect air particulate data, with U.S. N.R.C. approval, for background correctional
application to other sampling locations, because sufficient data has been accumulated
at BIIV-3 to make appropriate background corrections to the other sample location
data. The results of radionuclide concentrations for air sampling locations BFIV-I,
BHV-2 (nearest residence) BHV4 and BHV-5 are presented in Table IV. A review
of the information, comparing results to those from previous years indicalie no
potential upward trends in radionuclide at any location. Laboratory results are
attached.
Graphical representations of the air sampling data for the White Mesa Mill air
sampling locations since inception are included with this report. Note that all values

2.5 Ground Water Monitoring
The ground water monitoring program sample results for the third and fourth quarters
of 2000 are presented in Table V. Quality Control samples and Quality Assurance
samples are indicated on the respective quarterly results. An analysis and discussion
of this information is attached as Attachment I, Table V.
2.6 Surface Water Monitoring
Surface water samples were collected for Cottonwood Creek and are present,ed in
Table VI. No obvious analyte trend is evident from comparison of previous data for
Cottonwood surface water collection or for Westwater Creek sediment samples.
Laboratory results are attached.
2.7 Soil Sampling
Annual soil samples were collected for 2000 and the results are reported in l'ableVI[. No obvious analyte trend is evident from comparison of previous data for
samples. Laboratory results are attached.
Meteorological Data
EnecoTech Environmental Consultants, for the period of July l, 2000 through December 31,
2000, prepared the semi-annual Meteorological Monitoring Report for the White Mesa.Mill.
This information is retained at the Mill site for review and inspection.

The NRC February, 1992 Environmental Assessment states that the lvliil will use the Shewhart
Cusum control chart technique for interpretation of quarterly groundwater data. Copies of each of
the current control chart plots for the White Mesa Mill groundwater point of compliance quarterly
monitoring data are provided in this section. These plots include data from the most recent quarterly
point of compliance sampling event in December, 2001.
The control chart method is a parametric test. The underlying assumption in this method is that the
charts and control limits be developed based on a parameter that has a normal distribution. In some
cases the parameter which exhibits a normal distribution is the measured concentration of an analyte.
In some cases, the parameter is a function of the measured concentration, such as log, square root
or other power of the concentration. The parameters used for white Mesa Mill data include measured
concentration, log of concentration, or square root (0.5 power) of concentration, as appropriate, to
generate a new control chart, or a graphic output that can be compared to an existing control chart.
A summary interpretation of the control charts for this monitoring period is provided below.

Monitoring Well 12: The analytical results are not random (high serial correlation), hence a control
chart cannot be generated. The last period when the data were sufficiently

control limit on the chart was approximately 80 mg/L. The current data is
within the previously established upper control limit, hence the parameter is
in control.
