225 Union Blvd., Suite 600 Lakewood, CO 80228 RE: Inspection of Primary Radon Barrier Maintenance, Cell 2
Radioactive Material License Number UT1900479
Dear Ms. Weinel: On March 14, 2019, an inspection was conducted at the White Mesa Uranium Mill near Blanding, Utah
by Russ Topham, a representative of the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control. Results
of the inspection were discussed with plant management at the conclusion of the inspection. The inspection was an examination of the activities conducted in your facility as they relate to compliance with the Utah Radiation Control Rules and the conditions of the license. Specifically, the
inspection focused on maintenance of the Primary Radon Barrier. The field crew directed our attention
to erosion of the side slopes as the cover transitions to the temporary cover on Cell 3 to the south. While observing field conditions and while conducting closeout activities with plant management, wet conditions were presented as a constraint against immediately repairing the cover. The Division concurs with that assessment, and encourages rapid repair as soon as conditions permit.
Based on the findings documented during the inspection, the items reviewed were found to be in compliance with the Utah Radiation Control Rules and requirements for this license. If you have any questions, please call Russ Topham at (801) 536-4256.
Sincerely, Ty L. Howard, Director
