INTRODUCTION The site is a former gas station and auto shop at 45 North Main Street. The underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed in April 2023. During UST closure activities hydrocarbon concentrations exceeded Initial Screening Levels (ISLs) in a soil sample from the tank basin and exceeded Tier 1 levels in soil samples from three dispensers. The two groundwater samples collected in the tank basin exceeded Tier 1 levels. A subsurface investigation was completed in September 2023 which defined the extent of soil contamination. The extent of groundwater contamination was defined to Tier 1 levels, but not Initial Screening Levels (ISLs). It was determined that monitoring wells should be installed to define the extent of groundwater contamination to ISLs. METHODOLOGY Six monitoring wells were installed on March 27, 2024. Monitoring wells MW-4, MW-5, and MW- 9 were installed in the expected downgradient direction of known areas of contamination. MW-8 was installed in the former tank basin, and MW-6 and MW-7 were installed as cross gradient and upgradient wells, respectively, to define the extent of contamination. Well locations are shown on Figure 1. Direct Push Services was employed as the drilling contractor under the supervision of a Rockwell Solutions representative. Additional Subsurface Investigation, Main Street Service, Layton, UT, Facility #3000110, Release OIB Rockwell Solutions, Inc., 718 E. Bridger Lane, Elk Ridge, UT 84651 801-361-2930 rockwellutah@yahoo.com 2 Five-foot soil core samples were collected continuously from the direct push borings. A portion of the soil core was put in a zip-lock baggie to allow hydrocarbons to volatilize. The air in the zip lock baggie was then screened with a photoionization detector (PID). Laboratory samples were collected from intervals with the highest PID readings or, if no PID readings were detected, from the soil interval above the apparent groundwater table. Laboratory samples were analyzed for MTBE, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, naphthalene (MBTEXN) total petroleum hydrocarbons- gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) using EPA Method 8260 and TPH-diesel range organics (TPH-DRO) using EPA Method 8015. Monitoring wells were installed in each boring to a depth of eighteen to twenty feet with ten or fifteen feet of 0.010-inch screen. The wells contain a silica sand filter around the screen and a bentonite seal above the screen. A flush grade well protector was installed at the surface. The top- of-casing elevation at each well was measured to the nearest 0.01 foot using a transit level. The monitoring wells were developed and a groundwater sample was collected with a disposable bailer. The samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of MBTEXN and TPH-GRO using EPA Method 8260, and TPH-DRO using EPA Method 8015. RESULTS Soil Type Soil type was evaluated during the subsurface investigation by field analysis of soil samples. The native soil at the site consists of silt to a depth of approximately five to seven feet below grade which is underlain by a well-sorted sand layer to a depth of approximately fourteen to sixteen feet below grade. A silty clay layer is below the sand layer to at least twenty feet below grade. Boring logs are attached. Soil Analytical Results Table 1 lists the analytical results of the soil samples collected during both investigations and the tank removal. No hydrocarbon concentrations exceeding ISLs were detected in samples collected during the subsurface investigations. The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody records for soil samples collected during the additional subsurface investigation are attached. PID readings are shown on the boring logs. Free Product Approximately six inches of free product were found in MW-1, an existing monitoring well. A groundwater sample was not collected from MW-1. An oil absorbent sock was placed in the monitoring well. Groundwater Depth and Flow Table 2 lists the top-of-casing elevations and depths to water at the site monitoring wells. Groundwater monitoring data indicates depth to groundwater is between ten and twelve feet below grade. Groundwater flow on April 5, 2024, was to the southwest, as shown on Figure 2. Additional Subsurface Investigation, Main Street Service, Layton, UT, Facility #3000110, Release OIB Rockwell Solutions, Inc., 718 E. Bridger Lane, Elk Ridge, UT 84651 801-361-2930 rockwellutah@yahoo.com 3 Groundwater Analytical Results Table 2 lists the analytical results of the groundwater samples collected at the site. Other than the free product in MW-1, no other groundwater monitoring wells contained hydrocarbon concentrations exceeding Tier 1 levels. Monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, MW-8, and MW-9 contained hydrocarbon concentrations meeting or exceeding ISLs. The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody records for samples collected during the additional subsurface investigation are attached. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The extent of soil has been defined to ISLs and groundwater contamination has been mostly defined to ISLs at the site. The farthest downgradient well, MW-4, contains a TPH-DRO concentration slightly exceeding the ISL of 1.0 milligrams per liter. Free product has been found in MW-1. Rockwell Solutions recommends installing two to three more wells around the north side of the building to define the extent of free product and to be used as high vacuum dual phase extraction (HVDPE) wells to remove free product and impacted groundwater.
