Split Samples Collected: No
Is the work being performed in a manner consistent with the accepted workplan? Yes
SUMMARY: DERR met with Terracon on-site to oversee the characterization of hummocks and
stockpiles as part of site characterization. DERR was present during the entirety of
trenching/sampling for the day. Tim Stay with TOSA briefly stopped by at 1150 to discuss
characterization progress.
Upon arrival, DERR, Terracon, and the contractor walked the Site and identified the areas
previously marked for hummock sampling. The only hummock where accessibility became an
issue was on the west berm of the north ditch. Initially, the contractor attempted to dig into the
side berm, but was unable to continue due to heavy amounts of concrete. That information was
noted, but not recorded as a hummock location. The contractor was able to dig into the side berm
further down the drain to the south, where only dirt was encountered. A sample was collected at
this location along the north ditch.
A total of nine hummocks were dug for observation, with four of those locations sampled. Two of
the hummocks were located west of the north ditch, with the remaining seven hummocks collected
within the SLC Parks and Public Lands estimated storage area. Areas that were confirmed to
contain only wood chippings were previously removed from the Site. The history of the remaining
piles was uncertain. No landfill debris was located in any of the hummocks with several containing
organic material. Due to some observed discoloration and burned metal at hummock 7, DERR and
Terracon agreed to trench down to native and collect an additional opportunity sample (with a
sample also collected at the ground surface for the hummock).
All hummocks and trenches were backfilled in accordance with the Workplan.
DERR left the Site at 1330.
PHOTO LOG:
Photo 1: Attempt at the first hummock along the north ditch. The location needed to be moved
due to too much concrete in the side berm.
Photo 2: First hummock located along the north ditch (moved further south). No debris observed.
Sample collected.
Photo 3: Second hummock west of the north ditch. No debris observed.
Photo 4: Third hummock at the south end of the SLC Parks and Public Lands estimated storage
area. Hummock appeared to contain primarily organic material.
Photo 5: Fourth hummock located to the south end of the SLC Parks and Public Lands estimated
storage area. Hummock appeared to contain primarily organic material. Sample collected.
Photo 6: Fifth hummock for central pile in the SLC Parks and Public Lands estimated storage
area. Confirmed to contain wood chips and mulch.
Photo 7: Sixth hummock for one of the small eastern piles in the SLC Parks and Public Lands
estimated storage area. No debris observed. Sample collected.
Photo 8: Area of seventh hummock.
Photo 9: Seventh hummock where some darker soil was observed at the ground surface.
Terracon and DERR agree to dig further below ground surface to get an estimate on observed
impacts. Sample collected at ground surface.
Photo 10: Seventh hummock trenched to native. Discoloration along the sidewalls believed to be
burned metal. Samples collected. Recorded as a sampled hummock and a trench opportunity
sample.
Photo 11: Eighth hummock containing only soil. Contractor stopped further excavation into the
hummock to minimize dust.
Photo 12: Ninth hummock on other side of suspected mulch/wood chippings mound. Confirmed
to contain mulch.
