INCIDENT SUMMARY
At Skyline High School, the emergency shut off switch on a large generator failed and resulted in 1,200 gallons of diesel to be released. The generator
typically automatically turns on and off throughout the day, and for some reason the generator did not turn off. Diesel kept being pumped to the
generator, resulting in an overflow. Diesel then flowed into a containment unit on site that the generator is held within; this containment unit is not
connected to sanity sewer system & no waterways or storm drains impacted.
The spill began around 10pm and leaked for around an hour before it was stopped. There is currently no discharge occurring from the generator. Salt
Lake County HD, Hazmat, fire department, and the environmental safety specialist with Granite School District (Ben Holt) were on site. The fire
department put down booms/absorbent materials. The high school is currently under construction and there is limited access around the site. Ben Holt is
in contact with the construction company to have them come and build a temporary road to the generator - estimated time for this is 5am. After building
a temporary road, an environmental cleanup company (Ben is currently trying to find a company) will come and conduct remedial work.
It is estimated 100-200 gallons of diesel made it into containment vaults, the other 1000-1100 gallons is within the larger containment unit, but
pooled/puddled around.
