DRINKING WATER ORDER
Cove Water Works water system is contaminated with E. coli
BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING
What happened?
During routine water sampling conducted on May 27, 2025, for the Cove Water Works system,
one of the samples tested positive for both E. coli and total coliform. In response, four repeat
samples were collected and submitted to the laboratory on Friday, May 30, 2025. We were
notified the evening of Saturday, May 31, 2025, that the repeat samples also tested positive.
Upon receiving confirmation of these results, we immediately issued a boil order via text
message to all Cove Water Works customers.
What is being done?
The system was chlorinated on Saturday afternoon as a corrective measure. Flushing of the
distribution system is scheduled for Monday, followed by resampling to verify water quality and
ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.
What should the consumer do?
● DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil,
let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or
bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes,
and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in
the water.
● E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with
human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps,
nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants,
young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune
systems.
● The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you
experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical
advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their
health care providers.
