Subject:Slot Canyons Inn Storage Exception Request Letter
Sunrise Engineering, Inc. is submitting this letter on behalf of Slot Canyons Inn to request an exception to the
minimum storage requirements for the non-community water system.
Per R309-510-8 storage requirements for non-community systems shall be determined by
calculating the average day demands from the information given in R309 Table 510-4 and 510-5. The Slot
Canyons Inn system has five residential connections (400 gallons/connection) and one
Hotel/Restaurant connection with 10 units (75 gallons/unit or 250 gallons/ERC). The calculation for the
required storage capacity of the existing system is approximately 2,750 gallons. This is significantly higher
than what the Slot Canyons Inn system currently has available, resulting in a storage deficit of 2,660
gallons.
As an alternative to the above Rule requirements, Slot Canyons Inn has their well pump hooked up to a
backup generator that will keep the well pump running in the event of any loss of power. This will serve a
similar function to a culinary water storage tank in providing water supply during power loss supporting
public health and safety for the connections on the system. The pumping rate from the Slot Canyons Inn well
pump is set to 60 gpm. This rate provides the water system with adequate pressure to sustain the minimum
peak day pressure demands (40 psi) and the minimum peak instantaneous pressure demands (30 psi). With
the presence of backup power, the demands of the Slot Canyons Inn water system will be met even without
water storage.
For these reasons, Slot Canyons Inn is requesting exception from R309-510-8.
Sincerely,
Sunrise Engineering, Inc.
