Rockwell Solutions, Inc. has completed additional subsurface investigation activities at the above-
referenced facility in accordance with State of Utah Division of Environmental Response and
Remediation (DERR) guidelines.
INTRODUCTION
A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment was conducted at the above-referenced site in July 2024.
Based on hydrocarbon concentrations that exceeded Tier 1 levels, a release was reported to DERR
on July 29, 2024. A subsurface investigation in October 2024 defined soil and groundwater
contamination in some areas, but additional investigation was requested by DERR to define the
extent of offsite contamination.
SITE DESCRIPTION
The site is an operating gas station and convenience store located at 3878 W Highway 13 in Corinne,
Utah. The facility has two 6,000-gallon and one 5,000-gallon above ground storage tank (ASTs) in
a concrete-walled containment on the west end of the property. All three ASTs contain gasoline.
Diesel fuel is not sold at the facility. There are two dispensers under the canopy west of the
convenience store. A previous dispenser was located between the ASTs and the canopy. A site map
is provided as Figure 1.
METHODOLOGY
On April 10, 2025, five borings were installed around the site using direct push methodology.
Monitoring wells were installed in four of the borings. Access to install the borings was obtained
from Corinne City and property owners. Direct Push Services was employed as the drilling
contractor under the supervision of a Rockwell Solutions representative.
Five-foot soil core samples were collected continuously from the direct push borings. A portion of
the soil core was put in a zip-lock baggie to allow hydrocarbons to volatilize. The air in the zip lock
baggie was then screened with a photoionization detector (PID). The sample with the highest PID
reading or the soil interval above the apparent water table in each boring was submitted for
laboratory analysis of MTBE, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, naphthalene (MBTEXN)

total petroleum hydrocarbons-gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) using EPA Method 8260, and
TPH-diesel range organics (TPH-DRO) using EPA Method 8015. TPH-DRO is actually not
required as diesel has never been stored or sold at the site.
Groundwater was detected at approximately ten feet below grade (bg). Borings extended to
approximately seventeen feet deep in which monitoring wells were installed with ten feet of 0.010-
inch screen. The wells contain a silica sand filter around the screen and a bentonite seal above the
screen. A flush grade well protector was installed at the surface. The top-of-casing elevation at
each well was measured to the nearest 0.01 foot using a transit level. Monitoring well construction
diagrams are attached.
The monitoring wells were developed and groundwater samples were collected. Groundwater
samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of MBTEXN and TPH-GRO using EPA Method
8260 and TPH-DRO using EPA Method 8015.
RESULTS
Soil Type
Soil type was evaluated during the subsurface investigation by field analysis of soil samples. The
native soil at the site generally consists of silt or silty clay from the ground surface to approximately
ten to twelve feet bg. Below the silty clay layer is a silty sand to a depth of at least seventeen feet.
Boring logs are attached.
Soil Analytical Results
Table 1 lists the analytical results of soil samples collected at the site. No hydrocarbons exceeding
ISLs were detected in soil samples collected in April 2025. Figure 2 shows the approximate extent
of benzene in soil contamination based on historic data. The main area of contamination is around
the dispensers. The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody records for soil samples
collected during the additional investigation are attached. PID readings are shown on the boring
logs.
Groundwater Analytical Results
Table 2 lists the historic analytical results of the groundwater samples collected from the site
monitoring wells. Dissolved benzene exceeded the Tier 1 level in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-3,
MW-5, MW-6, MW-7, and MW-8. The extent of groundwater contamination is defined to Tier 1
levels. Benzene in MW-11, east of the site, exceeded the ISL. Figure 3 shows approximate
groundwater contamination areas. The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody records
for groundwater samples collected during the additional investigation are attached.
Groundwater Flow Direction
Groundwater elevation measurements indicate groundwater flow is to the east-northeast. Figure 4
is a groundwater contour map.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Soil and groundwater contamination exists at the site, centered around the area of the dispensers.
The groundwater contaminant plume has extended below the convenience store building and offsite
to the northeast and east. Groundwater samples will be collected at the site in approximately three
months, after which a corrective action plan can be prepared to address the contamination.
