HomeMy WebLinkAboutDERR-2025-004040VCP/Brownfields Section - Site Visit Report SITE NAME: Airport West / North Temple Landfill SITE LOCATION: Salt Lake City DATE OF SITE VISIT: 19, 21 May 2025 PURPOSE OF SITE VISIT: DERR (David Bird) oversight of field activities at the Airport West VCP site. FIELD OBSERVATIONS: On May 19, at ~9:30 am, the DERR met with Ninigret (Eric Rice) at the eastern boundary of the planned on-site Repository. Excavation of the 25 foot wide buffer zone was proceeding. A 3-4 foot thick layer of landfill waste (trash) was visible in the sidewall with relatively little leachate draining from that layer. There was about 4 feet of fill above the trash, which contained occasional pieces of trash. Construction of the WAIV unit at the leachate processing ponds is progressing, with a framework for the evaporation sails mostly complete. A demonstration of the WAIV system operation is expected on May 28, 2025. The crushing of concrete in the southwest portion of the site was continuing. Ninigret and the DERR discussed the schedule for the excavation of material from the waste cells of the landfill in Phase I. This is expected to commence near the end of May 2025, with excavation of the 25 foot buffer zone and dewatering of landfill cells in the footprint of the future repository to be among the first actions. The DERR left the site at ~11:15 am. On May 21, at ~9 am, the DERR met with Stantec north of the site (along 700 North) at soil gas sample location PV-38. The soil gas sample collection began at 9:28 am and ended at 9:51 am. At location PV- 39, soil gas collection began 10:29 am and ended at 10:54 am. The DERR left the sampling location at ~11:15 am. SPLIT SAMPLES COLLECTED: No IS THE WORK BEING PERFORMED IN A MANNER CONSISTENT WITH THE ACCEPTED WORKPLAN? Yes Looking north at the recently excavated 25’ wide buffer on the east border of the future Phase I repository site. The ponded water is leachate which drained from the trash seen in the sidewall. Looking southwest at the leachate pond where the WAIV (evaporation) unit is being installed. Placement of the evaporation sails is proceeding. Water seen in the pond is from recent rains. Looking southwest at Stantec personnel collecting a sample at PV-38. This is located in the parking lot of a warehouse building north of the 700 North Street.
