Kent,
Summarizing a few important points from our discussion yesterday. Feel free to comment as needed.
1. BMPs and the SWPPP are in place to help manage water from the spring runoff.
2. Based on the drone shot you provided, water seems to be accumulating in the diversion pond up BDPH. Additionally,
the channel has been cleaned out from last year and the grate appears clear and free of debris. Water bars are now in
place directing water to the channel. This should help manage snow melt up BDPH.
3. The settling pond in McHenry Canyon has been relocated to make room for the ski lift terminal, and expanded and the
new pond now has a better outlet. This should help with drainage and residence time for the water so silt can settle out.
Flow so far looks good. The previous settling pond was sampled last year after the high runoff and while nothing
exceeded cleanup goals, steps were still taken to expand the pond. This was designed to manage water and sediment
from Glencoe, which will be an important part of O&M.
4. A french drain was installed to manage water up BDPH emanating from the upper spring. This water is captured in the
same collection system as the portal water, but not blended. It is ultimately discharged to the new wetlands created east
of the repository. Some water measurements have indicated a flow of about 20 gallons/minute, which is a fairly
significant flow to divert away from the drainage channel and ultimately the repository.
5. The current retention basin immediately west of the repository will be moved up BDPH later this year (possibly July).
Again, the goal is to minimize water entering the repository.
6. Subsidence in the southwest portion of the parking lot will be addressed over the summer. The goal is to address this
issue, including a reduction of the steep grade in this area. Additional base/cover material will be brought in for the
work. This work will affect the repository until the project is complete.
7. We discussed the Talking Points prepared by Extell and the November 2023 memo provided by DERR. As noted, the
goal is to gather data through the runoff period and use it to evaluate and ultimately propose a remedy for the water
(which will be memorialized in an amended RAP).
To do over the next month(s):
1. complete amendment to VCA (defining site boundaries)
2. finalize RAR (water portion can be documented later in an amendment once the path has been established. Please
continue to maintain documentation for steps that have been taken already to help with the amendments, such as water
bars to direct runoff into the drainage channel)
3. planned site visits (first 4/15/2024)
4. review design documents provided to DERR (for example retention pond up BDPH)
5. evaluate spring runoff data (believe we are in year three or four of data collection during runoff ). Use this to discuss
the proposed water remedy and steps to amend the RAP.
6. once many of the above items are complete, other items on the DERR memo and Extell list will then become front and
center
Regards,
Bill
