SITE NAME: Airport West / North Temple Landfill
SITE LOCATION: Salt Lake City
DATE OF SITE VISIT: 8 May 2025
PURPOSE OF SITE VISIT: DERR (David Bird) oversight of field activities at the Airport West VCP site.
FIELD OBSERVATIONS: At ~1:30 pm, the DERR met with Stantec (Shauna and David Cline) at the
western site boundary. Stantec was in the process of collecting groundwater samples from the P3-S
well. The sampling was proceeding according to the accepted SAP. At ~2:15 pm, the DERR met with
Stantec (Casey) at piezometer P8. Sampling appeared to be going well.
At ~ 3 pm, the DERR met UIPA’s contractor, Ninigret (Gary McEntee & Eric Rice) at the site to discuss
how preparations for beginning remediation of Phase I at the site is coming along. Mobilization of the
excavation contractor is expected to begin the week of May 12th. Construction of the WAIV unit at the
leachate processing ponds is progressing, with a framework for the evaporation sails mostly complete.
The WAIV system for evaporation of leachate is expected to be operational by the end of May 2025.
The piles of crushed concrete (roadbase) in the southwest portion of the site have grown, and are
reported to total approximately 160,000 tons. The processing is expected to be complete by the end of
May 2025, with an expected total of 220,000 tons.
Ninigret and the DERR discussed the schedule for the excavation of material from the waste cells of the
landfill in Phase I. This is expected to commence near the end of May 2025, with excavation of the 25
foot buffer zone and dewatering of landfill cells in the footprint of the future repository to be among the
first actions.
The DERR left the site at ~4:00 pm.
