Re: Chromalox Ogden Utah Location – Geothermal Feasibility Study & Pilot Borehole
Dear Mr. Bird:
We would like to notify your office of Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ),
that our Chromalox Ogden facility is planning to use a renewable green energy source,
geothermal energy, to provide heating/cooling services to our manufacturing building.
Chromalox is beginning a feasibility study to investigate a potential geothermal system for
our Ogden facility in support of our goals of reducing energy consumption and carbon
emissions.
The first steps include completing a pilot borehole to analyze the soil properties (i.e.,
thermal conductivity test) in support of properly designing the system. The proposed
borehole will be installed on the southeastern portion of the Chromalox site. Based on the
results of our extensive investigation previously completed at the site, this area is not
considered to have groundwater or subsurface impacts from the historical releases on the
northern portion of the property. The system design company and drilling company is also
planning to install approx. 50’ of casing to eliminate any shallow groundwater that may be
encountered. Additional details of the pilot borehole including the estimated depth of 400
feet below ground surface are included as an appendix to this communication along with
a site figure showing the approximate borehole location.
Chromalox has actively been working on investigation, monitoring, and remedial activities
to address solvents contamination below the northern portion of the site, under the
Voluntary Clean Program. Chromalox is planning to coordinate with RPS (primary VCP
consultant) to provide technical oversight during the installation of the borehole. RPS will
field screen soils from the borehole for indicators of chemical impacts such as odors,
staining, and volatile emissions using a portable photoionization detector (PID). Based on
field conditions, soil samples may be collected for possible analysis in an off-site
laboratory. We will include the results of this pilot borehole in a future submittal to the
UDEQ. If the soil properties in this pilot borehole are favorable to support an onsite
geothermal system additional well(s) may need to be installed to support a full-scale
system. We welcome any feedback or requests for additional information.
Cordially,
Craig Bushey
Director; Environment & Sustainability

PARTS II and Ill: TEST PROGRAM OVERVIEW
As per recent communications with you, the Client requires thermal conductivity testing
(TC testing) to evaluate the potential benefits of Ground Source Heating and Cooling at
this site.
Preliminary research indicates that there is water in this area. Additional research
indicates that this water is probably artesian. However, proximal logs indicate this artesian
zone may be as deep as 500 feet at this site. We will plan the test hole(s) to drill to 400'
(four-hundred feet) deep using controlled drilling methods to avoid penetration of the
potential artesian zone and consider the endeavor to be successful with any target below
200 feet to 250 feet. A viable field between 200 feet and 300 feet will be acceptable for
this project.
Because of the local geology and well records, we recommend one test borehole with the
option to drill a second borehole if there are any down-hole problems. One completed
borehole will be tested for soil properties. If there are problems with the borehole, a
replacement borehole may be drilled at the Owner's discretion to confirm the site
conditions and/or provide a borehole that can be used for the test. Geologic conditions
should be consistent across the site. Only one borehole is to be tested. If a second
borehole is drilled and test of the second borehole is desired, both the drilling and test may
be added to the cost listed below.
The borehole(s) will be located on the site, in · locations chosen by you or the Owner.
Sound Geothermal will provide design, project drilling bid documents, supervision,
geological and drilling logging services, and a data acquisition (DAU) unit. The price for
this service will also include a subcontracted driller.
SGT will also provide tie-in of the DAU to the loop, power, and conduct the test for 40 -48
hours (minimum of 40 hours). The test must operate continuously for this time period
without interruption. Power must be high quality and un-interrupted, (this can be provided
on site or via a portable generator). Following the completed test, the data will then
immediately be transmitted to an independent lab for processing. The Lab confirms that
a 200' -600' test borehole is compatible with their analysis methodology. Data turnaround
is usually within 72 hours to one week, depending upon current backlog.
Under normal circumstances, the test borehole(s) will be included in the final ground
source heat exchange bore-field.
Requirements & Preparation -Closed loop portion
In addition to the Professional Logging Services, Sound Geothermal (SGT) to provide the
following for the TC test: □Geo-Test data acquisition unit with pigtail for accessing power□Shipping to and from the location□Coordination of test data and final analysis with Geo-Test, delivered electronically,
with hard copy to follow□230 volt, single phase power supply capable of sustaining a consistent amperage
load of up to 20 amps

The estimated lead-time for commencing this effort, as of today, is two to four weeks and
is also dependent upon any necessary approval(s) from the State of Utah and/or local
authorities, as well as drilling rig availability. Obtaining a drilling permit in Utah typically
takes up to two weeks from notice to proceed. The loaded test borehole must 'rest' at least
6 days from the time the loop is installed prior to the start of the test.
Client to provide the following:
D A valid legal description of the property inclusive of Section, Township, Range and
¼ ¼ of said Section or reasonable alternate.
D Physical, on site, indication of the borehole/well location(s) (location stake or
another marker).
D Cuttings, clean-up, and fluid disposal -all products used by the Drilling Contractor
are to be acceptable for potable water wells.
D Site security.
If this test site is adjacent to existing housing, it may present some minor noise problems
for the duration of the drilling and testing.
COMPENSATION -Drilling/Logging Phase:
This phase includes drilling observation and geologic logging services.

NOTE: Quoted fees do not include any local licensing, permitting, etc. Such requirements may
require revision of this MOU.
SGT is not responsible for the loss of data resulting from third party interference or other
impacts beyond our control. Should the test need to be re-run because of third party
power interruption, vandalism, or other reason beyond SGT's or Owner's control, SGT will
agree to provide the re-test for-, s trvel expenses. No additional supervision time will be
charged.
Penetration of the earth's crust is an inherently unpredictable operation. SGT and its
agents will conduct operations in a reasonable and business-like manner. SGT will not
be responsible should drilling conditions warrant variations of specified depth or
abandonment of the test because of adverse subsurface drilling conditions deemed by the
Drilling Contractor and SGT to be unacceptable.
If conditions prevail such that the boreholes are drilled and the data acquisition or Thermal
Conductivity Test is not run, the only additional cost to the client, if any, will be actual
freight expenditures for the Data Acquisition Unit and Test equipment.
Should drilling and or geological conditions be determined not to be conducive to the
installation of a ground loop heat exchanger prior to the thermal conductivity test unit being
shipped to the drilling site and the boreholes being loaded, SGT will only bill for out of
pocket expenses and consulting time based on SGT's normal fee schedule.
