INTRODUCTION The New Logan Market is a former gas station at 720 E 1000 North in Logan. Groundwater closure samples collected from the former tank basin in November 2024 exceeded Tier 1 levels and a release was reported. DERR assigned the site release code OMC and requested a subsurface investigation. The USTs and fuel system were removed as well as the canopy in November 2024 and the site is currently a convenience store and a restaurant. Most utility lines for the facility run from 700 East to the onsite building. The water line to the building runs along the east side of the property. Figure 1 shows the locations of utility lines. METHODOLOGY Five borings were installed in and around the former tank basin on January 17, 2025 using direct push methodology. Direct Push Services was employed as the drilling contractor under the supervision of a Rockwell Solutions representative. Five-foot soil core samples were collected continuously from the direct push borings. A portion of the soil core was put in a zip-lock baggie to allow hydrocarbons to volatilize. The air in the zip lock baggie was then screened with a photoionization detector (PID). The sample with the highest PID reading or the soil interval above the apparent water table in each boring was submitted for Subsurface Investigation, New Logan Market, Logan, Utah, Facility #0100093, Release OMC Rockwell Solutions, Inc., 718 E. Bridger Lane, Elk Ridge, UT 84651 801-361-2930 rockwellutah@yahoo.com 2 laboratory analysis of MTBE, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, naphthalene (MBTEXN) total petroleum hydrocarbons-gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) using EPA Method 8260 and TPH-diesel range organics (TPH-DRO) using EPA Method 8015. No soil sample was collected from boring B-5 which is located in the backfill of the former tank basin. Groundwater was encountered at approximately five feet below grade (bg). Groundwater samples were collected using a peristaltic pump from each boring. The samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of MBTEXN and TPH-GRO using EPA Method 8260, and TPH-DRO using EPA Method 8015. RESULTS Soil Type Soil type was evaluated during the subsurface investigation by field analysis of soil samples. The native soil at the site generally consists of silt (ML) to at least ten feet bg. Boring logs are attached. Soil Analytical Results Table 1 lists the analytical results of the soil samples collected during the subsurface investigation. All concentrations were below Initial Screening Levels (ISLs). The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody records for soil samples collected during the subsurface investigation are attached. PID readings are shown on the boring logs. Groundwater Analytical Results Table 2 lists the analytical results of the groundwater samples collected during the subsurface investigation. The sample from B-5, in the former tank basin, exceeded Tier 1 levels. The sample from B-3 slightly exceeded the ISL for TPH-GRO. Hydrocarbons were not detected in the other borings. Figure 2 shows the approximate extent of groundwater contamination at the site. The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody records for samples collected during the subsurface investigation are attached. TIER 1 CRITERIA Land Use The site is located in a mixed commercial and residential area. The nearest residence is approximately 125 feet to the north. Utilities Locations of buried utility lines in the investigation area were discussed previously. Depth of the water line on the east side of the site is five feet. The exact depths to the other utility lines are not known, but are estimated to be approximately two to three feet. Receptors A well search of the Water Rights database indicates no water rights are located within 500 feet of the site. See Figure 3. Bridger Lane, Elk Ridge, UT 84651 801-361-2930 rockwellutah@yahoo.com 3 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS No soil contamination has been detected in the UST removal sampling or during the subsurface investigation. Groundwater contamination is present onsite from the former tank basin and extending to the approximate western property boundary. Rockwell Solutions recommends installing monitoring wells to collect additional groundwater contamination and flow information to determine if active remediation is necessary or if the natural attenuation of the contamination can be monitored.
