General Provisions forDivision of Drinking Water (DDW) Approved Standard Installation Drawings & Specifications for Water Lines
(R309-500-7: Effective 11/7/2017)
Public Water Systems interested in obtaining approval must submit an application to DDW
Once approved, systems construct water lines up to 16” in diameter without any further interaction with DDW
Renew approval of standard installation drawings & specifications every five years
Notify DDW whenever standard installation drawings & specs change
Notify DDW whenever designated PE changes (PE for design or hydraulic analysis)
Water lines are the only drinking water facilities eligible for waivers (not tanks, pumps, treatment, etc.)
Water lines less than or equal to 16” in diameter qualify regardless of population
Booster pumps require plan approval by DDW
Water/sewer separation distances must meet the requirements in R309-550-7
Water line projects that cannot meet water/sewer line separation may be constructed but must obtain an exception to R309-550-7 from DDW prior to construction
Application
Applicationmust include the following:
A completed application form (available from DDW)
Standard installation drawings and specifications(if not adopting applicable and unamended APWA Part 5 standard drawings and Division 33 specifications)
Designation of a PE responsible to oversee water system design
Designation of a PE responsible to oversee water system hydraulic analysis
Statement from designated water system contact that:
hydraulic analysis will be done for each water line
flushing, disinfection, and coliform sampling will be done prior to operation of future water lines
as-built or record drawings will be maintained for each water line
Former Waiver Provisions Not Included in New Program
Master plan-based waivers no longer are available
Project eligibilityno longer based on pipe diameter or population served
Obtaining a waiver prior to construction of each water line projectno longer required
Obtaining an after-the-fact waiver for multiple projects at year end no longer required
Waiver eligibility no longer lasts forever; approvalof standard installation drawings and specifications must be renewed every five years
