Three groundwater extraction/ monitoring wells were installed and sampled in October 2024 prior to beginning remediation activities. Free product was observed in monitoring well MW-1, at the edge of the tank basin, in monitoring events on 10/25/22, 3/13/24, and 9/3/24. Free product was also observed in MW-4 on 3/13/24 and the thickness had increased significantly by 9/3/24. The Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR) requested activities to abate the free product. Monitoring/Extraction Well Installation Prior to remediation activities three additional wells, MW-8, MW-9, and MW-10, were installed to serve as monitoring and/or possible extraction wells. Figure 1 shows the locations of the wells. As in previous investigations, the native soil generally consists of sandy silt to approximately eleven feet below grade (bg), underlain by a layer of silty clay. Boring logs are attached. The two-inch monitoring wells were installed to a depth of fourteen feet with ten feet of screen. The borings were advanced using direct push methodology and the wells were installed in each boring with sand from the bottom of the boring to approximately one foot above the screen. A bentonite seal was placed above the sand to one foot below the ground surface. Well protectors were installed around each well and set with concrete. The monitoring wells were developed using a disposable bailer. Soil samples were collected continuously at each monitoring well boring in five-foot liners. A portion of the soil sample from each liner was put in a zip-lock baggie to allow hydrocarbons to volatilize. The air in the zip lock baggie was then screened with a photoionization detector (PID). Free Product Abatement and GMR, December 2024, Holiday Oil #75, West Point, UT, Facility #3000562, Release OHS Rockwell Solutions, Inc., 718 E. Bridger Lane, Elk Ridge, UT 84651 801-361-2930 rockwellutah@yahoo.com 2 The soil sample with the highest PID reading or the sample from just above the apparent groundwater table was collected for laboratory analysis. Soil samples were analyzed for MTBE, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (MBTEXN), and total petroleum hydrocarbons- gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) using EPA Method 8260 and TPH-diesel range organics (TPH-DRO) using EPA Method 8015. PID readings were very low or nonexistent in soil from the monitoring well borings. Table 1 shows historical soil analytical data collected at the site. Hydrocarbons were below Initial Screening Levels in the soil samples collected on October 10, 2024. Laboratory reports and boring logs/well construction diagrams are attached. Pre-Remediation Event Groundwater Monitoring On October 10, 2024, groundwater samples were collected from the three newly-installed wells using a disposable bailer. Each groundwater sample was immediately placed on ice and retained under chain-of-custody documentation until relinquished to the laboratory. Groundwater samples were submitted for analysis of MBTEXN and TPH-GRO using EPA Method 8260 and TPH-DRO using EPA Method 8015. Table 2 shows historical groundwater analytical data for the site. ISLs were exceeded in MW-10 only. Laboratory analytical reports are attached. CalClean Extraction Event From October 16, 2024 to November 15, 2024, CalClean conducted high vacuum dual phase extraction (HVDPE), extracting groundwater and vapors from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4, and MW-10. Groundwater Extraction The HVDPE system ran continuously during the 30-day event and extracted approximately 142,040 gallons of groundwater. The extracted groundwater was treated and discharged into the sewer system through an onsite sewer cleanout with authorization from the North Davis Sewer District. Approximately two gallons of diesel fuel were recovered, stored in a drum, and removed and disposed of by Sump and Trap Cleaning. Vapor Extraction The HVDPE system removed soil vapors in conjunction with the groundwater extraction. Vapor readings were collected from the field analyzer in the system three times a day and vapor samples were collected on a weekly basis to monitor hydrocarbon removal. Vapors were destroyed by a thermal oxidizer unit in the truck. CalClean has prepared an extraction report which calculates, based on the daily readings and weekly vapor samples, that approximately 126 pounds of hydrocarbons were removed during the 30-day event. The CalClean report is attached. Post-Remediation Event Groundwater Monitoring On December 6, 2024, groundwater samples were collected from MW-1, MW-3, MW-4, MW-8, MW-9, and MW-10. Depth to water was measured. There was no longer measurable free product in MW-1 or MW-4. Samples were collected from each well using a disposable bailer. Each groundwater sample was immediately placed on ice and retained under chain-of-custody documentation until relinquished to the laboratory. Free Product Abatement and GMR, December 2024, Holiday Oil #75, West Point, UT, Facility #3000562, Release OHS Rockwell Solutions, Inc., 718 E. Bridger Lane, Elk Ridge, UT 84651 801-361-2930 rockwellutah@yahoo.com 3 Groundwater samples were submitted for analysis of MBTEXN and TPH-GRO using EPA Method 8260 and TPH-DRO using EPA Method 8015. The results are included in Table 2 and the analytical reports are attached. Results Free product was apparently removed from the areas of influence of the extraction wells. Although measurable free product was no longer present, TPH-DRO concentrations remained high in MW-1 and MW-4. Conclusions and Recommendations The extraction event appears to have removed the free product, but TPH-DRO contamination remains. Rockwell Solutions recommends injection of a nitrogen-rich solution to stimulate biodegradation, which will be followed by groundwater monitoring.
