Resolution of BAT Concern, Rotary Dump Facility, Water Above Rotary
Building Sediment Basin Grate
Dear Mr. Hansen:
On January 24, 2025, the Best Available Technology (BAT) inspector discovered water
above the grate in the Rotary Building sediment basin. The drain line in the West Rotary
sump was found to be frozen causing water to build up above the grate. Clive Facility
Maintenance personnel were notified the same day, and the facility was immediately
taken out of service. Initial efforts to pump the water out caused the drain pipe to break
and resulted in the water rising above the grate again. In accordance with Part 4.15.3.3
of the BAT Contingency Plan (GWQDP Appendix K), EnergySolutions notified the
Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (DWMRC) on January 24, 2025
of this BAT concern via e-mail.
On January 27, 2025, EnergySolutions pumped the water level in the sediment basin
below the level of the grate, tested and inspected the pump, assured free drainage to the
Northwest Corner Evaporation Pond was restored, and then placed the facility back into
service. It appears the blockage was caused by frozen water in the discharge line and
with above-freezing temperatures between January 26 & 27, 2025 the frozen water
melted restoring free drainage.
This letter provides the 7-day written notification required by GWQDP Appendix K Part
4.15.3.3 and provides documentation of resolution of this BAT concern.
