Sorry - the anthracite is the top 18”-24” of the filter bed so we pushed the sample tool in until
we hit the sand and then pulled it out. We would then get rid of the bottom part of the sample
because we would pick up some sand. So we basically tried to use the middle 12+” of the
sample. I hope that was right, that is how the guy from Jordan Valley WCD instructed me to do
the sampling. When you sample with the sample tool you pull a sample of all or most of the
anthracite. So we just tried to get a clean anthracite sample without sand contamination and
without any contamination from the very top of the filter. Hopefully that makes sense and
hopefully that was done the way you want it. The direction I got from DDW was to ask the
JVWCD guy for direction. I don’t remember his name but we could find it in the emails. I also
received a lot of help, including the spreadsheet, from the operator in Duchesne with the
Central Utah WCD plant.

But were the samples from the top of the filter, of from the middle of the filter bed (in depth), or
small subsamples of all depths in the filter bed?

Yep, we just took one per filter. The pictures attached is probably the best way to see. One
picture is from Ferron and one is from Emery. There are two filters in each plant and all 4
filters were sampled and tested.

Can you confirm where the media samples were taken in the filter bed?

We are actually running a sample of the new material tomorrow because we just want to
see what it looks like brand new on the test. I will share the results with you. We have on
hand about a dozen brand new bags of anthracite. We use it to add to our anthracite
levels every few years. We lose it either through breaking down or backwashes.

Hi Sarah,
From the survey notes Garrett said he checks the filter depths once or twice a year in the
spring/fall. They were just missing the sieve analysis.

Hi Jacob,
Can you also confirm that the media depths were determined?
Did the media samples for Emery come from the top, middle, or composite? The
smaller than expected effective size might indicate that the filters need to be scraped
to remove fines. It also can be helpful to do a sieve analysis before new media is
placed in the filters to confirm that the size is as expected. We did see a case where
the size on the spec and the actual size did not match.
Best,
Sarah

Hello all,
I have data attached for our filter sieve analysis for both Ferron (08004) and Emery (08003) water treatment facilities. Our
testing yielded results from 1.4 to 1.5 on the uniformity coefficient. The results are all on the same workbook spreadsheet
but different tabs located at the bottom of the workbook. I attached an picture of the original packing slip for the anthracite
in Ferron. You will see 2018 dates on it. All of the anthracite we have is purchased through Filter Tech. The supplier looks
like its out of Pennsylvania.
The reason that is attached is because as did the tests we kept getting higher results than the 1.4 that was on the original
spreadsheet that I got from CUWCD. You will note that the packing slip calls for this anthracite to have a certain E.S. (1.0
– 1.1 mm) and a max 1.5 U.C. I am assuming that is effective size and uniformity coefficient. The same material was
used when we replaced media in the Emery plant the year before.
I know that I told you we would be doing the testing about a week and a half ago. When our engineer got the new sieve’s
and opened them he found that one was missing. They told him it would ship direct from the manufacture. He didn’t
receive it until last Monday. Garrett and I were already at the rural water conference in St. George so we decided to wait
until we got back to run the sieve analysis. Sorry I didn’t let you know sooner.
Please let me know what you think of our data and what the next steps are.

Hello,
I have spoken with Steven Blake at Jordan Valley WCD and he has agreed to come and help us with our filter sieve
analysis. Unfortunately, he is off until January 6th. In the meantime I am going to buy the filter sampling tool and get
everything that he and I discussed prepared. I know it is my fault for waiting this long before looking at this filter
analysis and I don’t have an excuse other than the fall is busy and I put it on the back burner. I am hoping for a little
grace period on this sieve analysis until I can get him here to help me.
Thank you,

Hi Jacob,
I wanted to follow up on our conversation from this past week.
To remove the filter media deficiency, you will need to have a sieve analysis done on the anthracite media, and that
analysis will need to show that the matches the specs of the originally installed media.
The sieve analysis standard is commonly cited from AWWA B100-16, but there is also an ASTM method, ASTM C136-
96a. The values that we need to get from the analysis are the uniformity coefficient and the effective size.
As mentioned, Stephen Blake has offered to help systems with the sieve analysis. There are also several commercial
laboratories that do this analysis as well.
Let us know if you have any questions.
Best,
Sarah
