DERR will take the lead and initiate an investigation of the gas stations nearby. Email from Mark Rees: Snowville was installing a new storm drain line when they encountered contaminated soil. The site was just west of the main intersection along the south side of the west bound road. Apparently, years (~40) ago this was the site of a service station. According to the mayor, this new storm drain trench is close to where the dispensers would have been located. The mayor says he thinks the tanks were removed awhile ago. I responded with a PID meter and did the test in a ziplock bag. It maxed out my meter at 9999 ppm. Most of the trench was dug to about 4 feet deep. Where the contamination was noticed we dug to 17 feet deep and the PID was still very active for those soils. I encouraged them to finish the storm drain trench and installation so that we did not leave a large excavation unattended.
