Hello Brian,
I hope you are doing well. I’ve asked Allison with the VCP group about this but wanted to follow up since this is a time
pressing issue.
The City owns property where an old municipal landfill is located (Redwood Dump at 1850 W Indiana Avenue). The landfill
has been closed since the 60s and the portions of the property around the landfill are being redeveloped to install tiny
homes for The Other Side Village. We are working through the VCP program, here’s the website that we put together for
the first phase of the project: https://www.slc.gov/sustainability/tosv-environmental/
There are some large piles of green waste in the area that is being investigated now and we need to remove those sooner
rather than later. The piles are primarily leaves and tree trimmings from Parks Department operations that have been
deposited there over many years. We are trying to find a solution to remove those piles quickly and cost effectively. One
solution the City is considering chipping tree trimmings and spreading the wood chips and the leaves over the landfill
cover. Anything that is not organic waste would be separated and properly disposed of offsite.
The City has had a policy of not disposing any waste over the landfill area since the landfill closed. However, given the
budget and time constraints we are faced with now, it would be a great if we could use the landfill area to dispose of this
green waste.
Does DWMRC have any concerns with the City placing organic waste over the cap of a closed landfill?
Please let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to call me if you’d like to discuss.
Thanks,
Catherine

Hi Catherine,
I spoke to Brian earlier this morning about this proposal. We do not have any initial concerns regarding this approach.
This is with the understanding that the yard waste material would be spread to another portion of the landfill owned by
SLC, and outside of the VCP boundaries. Please keep us updated if conditions change.
Best,
Allison
