Hansen Director, Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control Department of Environmental Quality ATTN: Adam Wingate P.O. Box 144880 Salt Lake City, UT 84114-4880 Dear Mr. Hansen: On January 29, 2024, the Tooele Army Depot North Area (TEAD-N) verbally notified the Utah Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (UDWMRC) that an emergency permit was required to open detonate compromised explosive items. The compromised items consist of 141 High Explosive 3.5-inch Rockets. TEAD-N received verbal approval from Adam Wingate, a member of your staff, on February 1, 2024. The emergency permit granted for this operation is UT-002-2024. During routine inspection, these items were found to be suspended due to the possibility that Cubric Azide compounds have formed in the fuzes and deemed unsafe for storage. They will be detonated near their current storage igloo, C506, by The Air National Guard Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). The detonations will occur between the days of February 12 – February 23. The total net explosive weight, including donor, that will be detonated is approximately 468.888 pounds. Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Jay Nelson, a member of my staff, at (435) 833-3248.
