RE: Cool Springs Water Company – Well Protection Letter to Landowners Located in Zone I
and II
Dear Owner,
Cool Springs Water Company operates a potable water well, the location of which is shown in
the attached site plan. This letter and accompanying information are being sent to landowners
with property that falls within the well protection zones. The well protection zones have been
established to prevent contamination of the groundwater source. It is essential to maintain the
groundwater in pristine condition as this well serves as a source of potable water for the Beaver
Springs Ranch development.
The State of Utah, Division of Drinking Water, oversees all public and semi-public state drinking
water sources. As a water provider, Cool Springs Water Company is required to ensure its
potable water sources remain clean and pure. One of the company’s responsibilities is to inform
landowners about the source location and water flow through the protection zones. Your property
falls within either Zone I or Zone II, which is why you have received this notice.
There are many potential risks for contaminating the groundwater, one of which is the septic
systems used by cabins in Weber Canyon. Below are some key practices for maintaining your
septic system in a way that helps protect the water source.
Tips for Proper Septic System Maintenance:
Do Not Flush Non-Biodegradable Items
Avoid flushing items like diapers, sanitary products, dental floss, or so-called “flushable”
wipes. These items do not break down easily and can clog your system.
Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners
Use natural, mild cleaners instead of chemical drain cleaners, which can harm beneficial
bacteria in your septic system and hinder its waste breakdown process.
Limit Grease Disposal
Never pour cooking grease or oil down the sink. These substances can solidify and block
your pipes and septic tank. Dispose of grease in an appropriate container and throw it in
the trash.
Moderate Garbage Disposal Use
If you use a garbage disposal, avoid overloading it with food scraps. Consider scraping
plates directly into the trash or compost bin to reduce strain on your septic system.
Avoid Excessive Water Usage
Be mindful of water usage. For example, try to avoid doing multiple loads of laundry in
one day to prevent overloading your septic system.
Do Not Dispose of Hazardous Chemicals
Never dispose of chemicals like paint, pesticides, or solvents down the drain or toilet, as
these can contaminate your septic system and the environment.
Avoid Heavy Machinery
Take care not to drive heavy machinery over your septic tank or drain field, as it could
cause significant damage to the underground infrastructure.
Essential Septic Tank Maintenance Tips:
Be cautious when landscaping near your septic tank or drain field. Deep-rooted trees or
shrubs could damage the system.
Keep manhole covers and inspection ports accessible.
Educate all household members about proper septic system care and share a list of items
that should not go into the system.
Keep a record of all maintenance, inspections, and pump-outs to stay on top of any
required services and identify potential issues.
SEPTIC TANK CARE
The septic tank is an integral component of your cabin\home’s wastewater management
system, and proper care must be taken in order for it to operate efficiently. Knowing what
not to put in a septic tank as well as taking all necessary precautions, will extend its
lifespan while decreasing repair costs over time. With proper attention paid towards
keeping up a functioning septic system for years to come.
