RE: UPDES Minor Industrial Permit UT0000612 Part I.C.3.a. - Cooling Water Intake Structure Actual
Intake Flow
Dear Mr. Mackey,
McWane Ductile Utah (MDU) submits this report in response to UPDES Minor Industrial Permit
UT0000612 Part I.C.3.a., regarding cooling water intake structure (CWIS) actual intake flow (AIF).
MDU is currently limited in measuring intake flow quantity at its process water Ironton Canal intake
structure. Portions of this water are metered while others are not. Previous estimates of canal water
use have relied on metered city culinary makeup water use and estimating its proportion of use
compared to canal water, in consultation with plant operators. The maximum flow into the CWIS is
limited by pipe slope and its 12-inch diameter.
MDU proposes to install one certified industrial water meter on the water line between our process
water cooling pond (million-gallon pond) and the CWIS, and another certified industrial water meter on
the combined pond/canal water line immediately upon its entry into our production building. The
difference between the two flows is the quantity sourced from the CWIS. The two locations are marked
by stars on Figure 1 below.
