Section 2.0 - Delineation Report
The boundaries for zones 2, 3, and 4 are based only on topographic divides; however, topographic divides and surface
water divides are not always groundwater divides. If a topographic divide is used in a delineation as a groundwater divide,
evidence for the groundwater divide must be explained in the delineation report. One method to support the delineated
zones may include an estimation of the catchment area necessary for Canaan Springs. Catchment area calculations are
explained in the report titled Investigation of Hydrogeologic Mapping to Delineate Protection Zones Around Springs -
Report of Two Case Studies, which I believe you have a copy of. The catchment area calculations would be similar to the
ones you completed for Springdale Town's Big Spring. I have some concerns about the size of the management area. It is
only 0.3 square miles and I want to be sure that the management area is large enough to accommodate the flow coming
out of Canaan Springs (assuming there are no other water rights in the zones that also need to be included).
I'm assuming that catchment area calculations will confirm the boundaries as they are currently delineated. If you change
the delineation, please be sure to update all subsequent sections of the report.

in Big Plains Water SSD – Canaan Springs System. This document has been revised according to your
preliminary review comments. The delineation was performed using the hydrogeologic mapping method as
related by Mark Jensen and others in the 1997 EPA report entitled Investigation of Hydrogeologic Mapping
to Delineate Protection Zones Around Springs.

I assumed that 15% of the average annual precipitation recharged to the springs instead of 10% as used in
the 1997 EPA report. The required catchment area was 1.0 square miles, resulting in that the upstream
boundaries of the DWSP zones extend over the ridgeline by approximately 3500 feet to other drainages.

Hi Deidre,

I am wondering if you have completed the review for the PER and DWSP Plans for the four sources in the
Big Plains Water SSD – Ceder Point System (27089). Looks like that our client won’t be able to pay us until
obtaining the concurrence letters from DDW. We got the same problem from Angell Springs SSD (27074,
update for three sources) as well.

Hi Li,
I have reviewed the revised PER/DWSP Plan for Canaan Springs. I can concur with the delineation and have added it to
our GIS. Before I can concur with the plan, I will need proof that a map of the final source protection zones has
been provided to Washington County to be covered under their source protection ordinance. This is also required
for the Operating Permit.
I will also prioritize the review of the updates for Angell Springs 27074 since it is holding up payment. If you don't see
something in the next month, please feel free to reach out again.
