The groundwater flow direction in the vicinity of the site is generally toward the south-southeast with a calculated hydraulic gradient from 0.012 to 0.036 feet per foot. Benzene concentrations of greater than 0.30 mglL, the Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) Tier 1 screening level for benzene, were detected in monitor wells B-5 and B-9. Benzene concentrations of greater than 0.005 mglL, the Federal Drinking Water Maximum Contaminant kvel (MCL) for benzene, were detected in monitor wells B-4, B-5, B-7, B-9, B-10 and B-11. Naphthalene concentrations greater than 0.10 mg/L, the RBCA Tier 1 screening level for naphttralene, were detected in monitor wells F9 and F10. Naphthalene concentrations above Q.}2mglLthe Drinking Water Heath Advisory for naphthalene, were found in wells B.4, B-B-7, B-9 and B-10. Benzene and naphthalene concentrations were betow laboratory detection levels in monitor wells B-1, B-2, and B-3. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Groundwater sampling was performed by }vlaxim Technologies, Inc. (Maxim) in November, 1995 at Big-O Tire located on 208 South Main Street in Richfield, Utah. The site is assigned LUST Release Identification Number EHLR. The purpose of the sampling was to monitor total petroleum hydrocarbon GI,ID and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, bd xylenes, and naphthalene (BTE)olI) concentrations in groundwater at and in the vicinity of the site. This report presents the results of the November 1995 sampling event. 2.0 GROTJNDWAIER, MOMI1ORING Quarterly groundwater monitoring was performed at the site on November, 1995. Monitor wells B--1, B-i,-B-3, B-4, B-5, B-7, B-9, B-10, and B-11 were sampled during this event. A field dupiicate'sampte was collected from B-5 and was labeled B-12. Sampling was performed in accordance with Utatr Administrative Code R311-205. The groundwater flow direction at the site is generally toward the south-southeast, and the catculated hydrautic gradient for the site ranges from 0.012 tro 0.036 feet per foot (ff/ft). This information-was obained from static water-level measurements of all site monitor wells prior to groundwater sample collection. The gradient in the vicinity of monitor wells B'9, B-10, and g-It is stee, per than to the north as shown in Figure 1. It is not clear what is causing this change in th; gradient. Water elevation data from December, 1993 showed a similar steepening in gridient. Table 1 presents a summary of groundwater elevations at the site from monitoring "u*t" to date. A map showing the monitor well locations and the most recent groundwater elevation contours and flow direction is presented as Figure 1. All downhole sampling equipment was decontaminated with a detergent (Alconox) wash and triple-rinsed with de-iJnized water prior to use. Each of the monitor wells was purged of a minimum of three casing volumes using a 1.75-inch{iameter stainless steel or a 3-inch PVC bailer. purge water from ttre monitor wells was poured onto the ground in the vicinity of the 'o( former underground storage tank (USD location and allowed to infiltrate back into the ground. Hydrocarbon odors were noted in purge water from all monitor wells sampled except for B-1 ^a g-2. The purge water from monitor well B-5 was dark black in color and had a slight hydrocarbon sheen. No free product was noted in any of the monitor wells sampled during this monitoring event. Groundwater samples were subsequently cotlected for laboratory analysis using factory-sealed and decontaminated disposable bailers. The samples were poured into pre-preserved vials, placed on ice and deliveied under chain-of*ustody documentation to Utility Testing Iaboratory in Salt hke Ciry. The samples were analyzd for TPH and BTD(N by EPA methods 8015 modified atd ffi2, respectivelY. N :lCItATwIItlDEFSlB l@ I I 95. RO I Pagc I 3.0 COMPARI^SON TO TIER I SCRE,ENING LEYELS Benzene concentrations of greater than 0.30 mglL, the Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) Tier 1 screening level for benzene, were detected in monitor wells B-5 and B-9. Benzene concentrations of greater than 0.005 mEL, the Federal Drinking Water Maximum Contaminant Ievel (MCL) for benzene, werie detected in monitor wells B-4, B-5, B-7, B-9, B-10 and B-11. Iaboratory anatytical results of groundwater samples for benzene concentrations in site monitor wells are listed below: Iaboratory results detected benzene in B-ll, located approximately 220 feet downgradient of the former UST location, at a concentration of 0.075 mglL. Last monitoring event, benzene was not detected in B-11. Consequently, it appears that the benzene plume in groundwater is migrating downgradient. Naphthalene concentrations grater than 0.10 mg/L, the RBCA Tier I screening level for naphthalene, were detected in monitor wells B9 and B-10. Naphthalene concentrations above O.02mglLthe Drinking Water Heath Advisory for naphthalene, were found in wells B-4, B-B-7, B-9 and B-10. Naphthalene concentrations detected in groundwater monitor wells are fisted below: Wells Naohthalene Concenhations Wells . B-4o B-5. B-7o B-9o B-10o B-11 o B-4o B-5o B-7o B-9o B-10o B-11 Benzene Concentrations 0.006 mgL, 0.492 mglL, 0.197 mElL, 0.867 mglL, 0.104 mglL, and 0.075 mglL. 0.028 mglL, 0.018 mglL, 0.059 mglL, 0.194 mglL, 0.143 mg/L, and 0.017 mglL. A duplicate sample collected from B-5, labelled B-12, was analyzed for TPH and BTE)O{. Both the benzene and naphttralene concentrations measured in B-12 were within 11 percent of the values detected in sample B-5 showing very good laboratory repeatability. Groundwater samples from monitor wells B-1, B-2, and B-3 were non-detect for all analyzed parameters during this sampling event. N :lC IIATIflMDEI,RIB I@ I I 95. RO I Page 2 Table 2 presents a summary of the groundwater sample laboratory analytical results tro date. Figure 2 presents an isoconcenhation map for benzene in groundwater at the site. Figure 3 presents an isoconcentration map for naphthalene in groundwater at the site. The laboratory analytical reports, chain-of+ustody forms, and sampling forms from this sampling event are included as Appendix B. 4.0 SUMMARY A quarterly groundwater monitoring event was performed at Big-O Tire in Richfield on November 7,1995. The groundwater flow direction is generally toward the south-southeast at the site with a calculated hydraulic gradient ranging from 0.012 ff/ft to 0.036 ff/ft. Benzene concentrations greater than 0.30 mglL, the RBCA Tier I screening level, were detected in groundwater off-site and up to 190 feet downgradient of the former UST location in monitor wells B-5, B-7, B-9, and B-10. Naphthalene concentrations of greater than 0.10 mg/L, the RBCA Tier 1 screening level, were also detected in groundwater up to 190 feet downgradient of the former UST location in monitor wells B-9, and B-10. Laboratory results were non{etect for benzene and naphthalene in monitor wells B-1, B-2, and B-3. I-aboratory results detected benzene in B-11, located approximately 220 feet downgradient of the former UST location, at a concenEation of 0.075 mglL. T ast monitoring event, benzene was not detected in B-11. Consequently, it appears that the benzene plume in groundwater is migrating downgradient. 5.0 LINIITATIONS The sampling documented in this report was performed in accordance with the generally accepted practices in this geographic area. Maxim has observed the same degree of care and skill generatly exercised by other consultants using the limited data gathered during the course of the investigation. Specifically, Maxim does not represent that the site contains no other hazardous materials or conditions beyond ttrose observed during these sampling events. N :ICIIATWIIiIIDERRWCO I I 95.
