Re: Soil Management Report Butterfield Canyon Trailhead Construction, Salt Lake
County Parks & Recreation, Herriman, Utah
Dear Mr. Gronseth:
The Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR) received the Soil
Management Report Butterfield Canyon Trailhead Construction, dated April 17, 2024. This
document reports on the construction activities and resulting soil management activities conducted
at the Butterfield Canyon Trailhead property located within the Kennecott South Zone Operable
Unit 3.
The report noted that soils exceeding the Recreational Land Use Standard of 2,207 mg/kg
lead remained in place when a minimum of two feet of clean fill was placed over the contaminated
soils. The areas near the creek were graded. In these areas, one foot of impacted soils was removed
and two feet of backfill was placed. In addition, orange construction plastic fencing was installed
as a marker barrier to delineate between native soils and clean fill material. The DERR recommends
regularly monitoring these delineated areas for visible signs of the orange marker barrier and
managing any daylighting instances as appropriate under the Salt Lake County maintenance plans
for the trail system. Continued monitoring of the trailhead will ensure that the remedy remains
protective to the public.
