Results of Soil Sampling:
On January 8, 1ggg, the former
8y N C'q.Q'-
asoline dispenser islands were removed during the renovationof the Cashsaver Service Station located at 30S South Main Street in Richfietd, Utah. Ma p#1shows the locations of the dispenser islands. On e soil sample was cottected from each e nd ofthetwo dispenser islands at a depth of 4.0 feet
one soil sample, ss-9, which was collected from the east end of the northernmost dispenseri;la1o' showed high levels of gasoline contamination. genzene was found at a concentration of44'6 parts per million.and gasoline-range TPH was found .t r
"on""ntration of l,230parts permillion' The analyticalresults are prese-nted in Table t. rne vatues which exceeded RBCA Tier 1screening levels are highlighted in red. ln this sample, attttre constituents exceeded the Tier 1screening levels.
A volume about 12 f9.l nv 15 feet by 6 feet in depth was then excavated and taken to the countylandfill for disposal' This amounted tb about 60 tons or contaminatect soil being removed.
The renovation of the service station was completed and the service station was reopened. Map#2 is the layout of the current service station.
It was recently the clegirg of the DERR proie+ manager (JM) that confirmatory soil samptes becollected from this area in order to ascertain how mu-cn siiii i,oniamination r-"! ,"rrining in thesubsurface' consequently three soil samples were collected from this location at various depths.
on November 17,20a0, a GeoProbe direct-push sampling device owned and operatecl byEarthProbe, lnc., of Bountiful, Utah, was useo to coileli iniiamptes. The soil samples werecollected from the center of the location where the contaminated soil was removed.
The sampling location is indicated on Map #2 as 'Gp_1,,.
A soilsample was first collected from a depth of 6.0 to g.0 feet BGS. This sample was quitediscolored (black) and had a strong gasotine odor.
A soil sample was next collected from a depth of 8.0 to 10.0 feet BGS. This sample was alsoquite discolored and had a strong gasoline odor.
Lastly, a soilsample was collected from a depth of 10.0 to 12.0 feet BGS. This sample was notdiscolored and did not have an odor.
The soil samples were stored on ice and delivered to a state certified lab for analysis. Theanalytical results are presented in Table ll. lnspection of this data reveals that the two uppermostsamples had considerable amounts of gasolini contaminJion rr,"r""r the bottommost sampleonly had a slight amount of contamination.
rJEt: 29 2000
Page 2
The sample that was collected from a depth of 6.0 to 8.0 feet BGS had a benzene concentration
of 3.12 parts per million and a gasoline-range TPH concentration ol2,724 parts per million.
The sample that was collected from a depth of 8.0 to 10.0 feet BGS had a benzene concentration
of 3.58 parts per million and a gasoline-range TPH concentration of 2,444 parts per million.
The sample that was collected from a depth of 10.0 to 12.0 feet BGS had a benzene
concentration of less than 90 parts per billion and a gasoline-range TPH concentration of 167
parts per million.
Any constituents that exceeded RBCA Tier 1 screening levels are highlighted in red. ln addition to
benzene and TPH, only naphthalene exceeded the screening levels in the two uppermost soil
samples.
Results of Groundwater Sampling:
Four groundwater monitoring wells were installed at the Richfield Premium Oil Service Station on
September 23-24, 1999. Each of the four wells was drilled to a total depth of fifieen feet. The
lower ten feet of the wells consisted of 2-inch diameter slotted PVC casing with 0.020-inch slots.
The upper five feet of the wells consisted of 2-inch diameter solid PVC casing.
Map #2 shows the locations of the wells.
Groundwater samples were collected from the wells on November 17, 2000. Prior to the
groundwater collection, the depths to groundwater were measured. The depths to groundwater
are presented in Table lll.
Three casing volumes of groundwater were removed from the wells prior to collection of the
samples. The samples were placed in 40-ml VOA vials and then placed on ice. The samples
were delivered to a Utah-certified analytical laboratory for analysis of BTEXN, TPH, and MTBE.
The analytical results are presented in Table lV
Only slight or no contamination was present in the groundwater samples that were collected from
the four monitoring wells.
