SOIL CONFIRMATION SAMPLING REPORT
BUILDING 2212 AND 2214 SOIL CONFIRMATION SAMPLING
765 NORTH 2200 WEST
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
INTRODUCTION
Wasatch Environmental, Inc., (Wasatch) has completed soil confirmation sampling activities near
buildings 2212 and 2214 at the Utah Air National Guard (UTANG) property located at 765 North 2200
West in Salt Lake City, Utah (Site). These activities consisted of the collection of eight soil
confirmation samples from within an excavated trench at the Site.
BACKGROUND
The UTANG, specifically 151 CES, experienced a diesel fuel release within a fuel line piping run
during the installation of underground water utilities at the Site. The UTANG removed approximately
337 feet of fuel piping and some diesel fuel-impacted soil from the release area (the fuel piping run).
The UTANG requested that Wasatch collect soil confirmation samples to verify that the diesel-
impacted fuel piping run had been sufficiently remediated.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this sampling event was to evaluate the current petroleum hydrocarbon impacts
within the excavated trench at the Site involved with a release of diesel fuel.
FIELD METHODOLOGY
See Appendix A for a photolog of the field activities. A visual observation of the entire length of the
open trench was completed by walking the trench to evaluate for residual soil staining and petroleum
hydrocarbon odors.
Soil Confirmation Sampling
On September 28, 2023, Wasatch Environmental Scientist, Mrs. Anna Fiorini, completed the trench
inspection and soil confirmation sampling activities within the open trench at the Site. Wasatch
collected eight soil confirmation samples (CS-1 through CS-8) from the floor of the trench at
approximately 3 feet below ground surface (bgs). The CS-1 sample was biased to the area where the
fuel piping was damaged and released the diesel fuel. From this area, Wasatch collected soil
confirmation samples to the east and west to not allow more than 50 linear feet of trench to go
unsampled, per Utah Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR) guidelines.
The soil samples were field logged by Mrs. Fiorini. The field logging included a description of color,
moisture content, consistency, odor, staining, and soil type based on the Unified Soil Classification
System and screened in the field with a photoionization detector (PID). The PID was utilized to
identify soils which have been impacted by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as those found in
petroleum constituents and some chlorinated solvents.
Soil samples collected for analysis of methyl tertiary-butyl ether, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total
xylenes, and naphthalene (MBTEXN) were collected using a laboratory-supplied sampling device,
sample preservation methods, and sample containers consistent with U.S. EPA Method 5035A for the
Soil Confirmation Sampling Building 2212 and 2214 Soil Confirmation Sampling

collection of VOCs. Soil samples were collected from each sample interval for both low-range (0.5 to
250 micrograms per kilogram [µg/kg]) and high-range (>250 µg/kg) laboratory analysis for VOCs.
Low-range soil samples were collected as 5-gram (g) aliquots and placed in laboratory-supplied,
unpreserved volatile organic analysis (VOA) bottles, and immediately placed in a cooler with dry ice.
High-range samples were collected as 10-g aliquots and placed in laboratory-supplied VOA bottles
preserved with methanol and immediately placed in a cooler with ice. All soil samples collected for
total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel-range organics (TPH-DRO) were collected into 4-ounce glass
jars. All soil samples were delivered under chain-of-custody protocol to Chemtech-Ford Laboratories,
a Utah-certified analytical laboratory, for analysis of MBTEXN using U.S. EPA Method 8260D and
TPH-DRO using U.S. EPA Method 8015D.
RESULTS
Soil Confirmation Sampling
Soil within the trench generally consists of silty clay (CL) with some fine-grained sands lenses.
Groundwater was not encountered within the trench. No field indications (i.e., soil staining, elevated
PID readings, or odors) of contamination were observed within the trench.
Analyte concentrations in soil were compared to the Utah Initial Screening Levels (ISLs) and the Utah
Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) Tier 1 Screening Levels. Sample locations are shown in Figure
2. Soil analytical data are summarized in Table 1. The laboratory analytical report and chain-of-
custody documentation are presented in Appendix B.
No analytes were detected above laboratory reporting limits in any of the samples.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Wasatch successfully completed a visual observation of the entire trench at the Site and collected
eight soil confirmation samples from the floor of the trench.
No field observations indicative of contamination was observed within the trench at the Site.
Based on the soil data, no petroleum hydrocarbons were detected within the trench. Therefore, the
release within the trench area appears to have been remediated to concentrations below the
applicable Utah ISLs.
Based on the data, no further investigation is recommended, and the trench can be backfilled at
UTANG’s convenience.
