Criteria to use when choosing sampling sites are as follows:
- Accessible at reasonable times of the day for sampling
- Available during the entire year
- Located throughout the entire distribution system
- Not the last service site on a dead end line
- Has a tap suitable for sampling: preferably a single cold water non-swivel
and non-aerated tap
- No cross-connections with non-potable water sources
- Seasonal and public buildings (churches, schools, parks, etc.) can also be used

Sampling site plans should be reviewed each year to make certain the plan is current.
