Re: Groundwater Quality Discharge Permit Number UGW450005 (GWQDP) – BAT
Concerns, Rotary Dump Facility & SRS DU Storage Building
Dear Mr. Hansen:
On February 20, 2024 water was found above the grate in the sediment basin of the
Rotary Dump Facility. The facility was placed out of service and the water was pumped
down below the grate the same day by putting the pump into manual mode. Maintenance
was notified of the issue the same day and repairs were scheduled for February 22, 2024.
Per GWQDP Appendix K 4.15.2.4.7, EnergySolutions notified the Director of Waste
Management and Radiation Control of the concern via e-mail on February 21, 2024. On
February 22, 2024 water was above the grate due to a rain event of 0.29 inches from the
evening of February 20, 2024 through the afternoon of February 21, 2024, delaying pump
repairs. The pump was put into manual mode and the water was pumped below the grate
the same day. Per GWQDP Appendix K 4.15.2.4.7, EnergySolutions notified the Director
of Waste Management and Radiation Control of the concern via e-mail on February 22,
2024. On February 23, 2024 maintenance replaced a cracked float that was preventing the
pump’s auto mode for operating correctly. The facility was placed back into service on
February 22, 2024.
On February 20, 2024 the BAT inspector discovered the presence of water in the interior
of the SRS DU Storage Building. Water did not contact any waste containers. The Clive
Facility received 0.36 inches of measurable precipitation from the night before. The BAT
inspector removed the water on the same day as the inspection by wiping the water from
the protective plastic. EnergySolutions notified the Director of Waste Management and
Radiation Control of the concern via e-mail on February 21, 2024.
