Upper Whittemore Canyon Water is contaminated with E. coli
BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING
What happened?
On July 28th, 2024, Upper Whittemore Canyon Water Co. captured routine water samples from
UTAH25136. The water samples were collected at Crandall Spring, Bathtub Spring, and Lot 91.
The lab results we received back on July 30th, came back as total coliform positive and/or E. coli
positive. Follow up/repeat samples were taken on August 1st which confirmed there is E. coli in
the distribution system.
What is being done?
Once I received the results on July 30th, I emailed the State and posted on Facebook to notify all
owners and place a boil water advisory until further testing could be done. The board emailed
the same information out, and a paper notice was placed on the entrance to UPWD. Once the
repeat samples confirmed the contamination, we began investigating the sources to identify and
remedy any potential contamination. We started a manual drip process to add chlorination into
the system and will continue taking water samples and chlorination residue testing to ensure the
quality of our water. The long-term solution that we are working with will include installing 2
chlorination systems to address Crandall and Fern/Bathtub Springs.
What should the consumer do?
• DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil,
let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or
bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes,
and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in
the water.
• E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with
human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps,
nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants,
young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune
systems.
• The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you
experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical
advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their
health care providers.
