October 16, 2024: Mark Crim, DERR PM, held a video conference with Gage Charlesworth-Ogden RDA,
and Chris Nolan and Blake Downey of Wasatch Environmental. The discussion concerned test pit
groundwater re-sampling of the former 4-UST area, north of the orphan UST discovered in April 2024
(Release OJY). In April, environmental studies linked to the orphan UST, led to test pit groundwater
sampling. Sample results for TP-7 and TP-8 had TPH-DRO levels above the DERR Tier I standard and
triggered a DERR concern about the former 4-USTs closed in-place in 1998.
In the meeting, Wasatch declared that re-sampling of the groundwater occurred at the former 4-UST area.
In May, 2024, a grab sample of water was taken from the open pit of the former 4-UST location.
Apparently, the pit was open following the removal of the 4-USTs in 2015. When groundwater appeared
in the open pit in May, the sample (NE Pit South) was collected. It was analyzed for (MBTEXN), (TPH-
GRO) and (TPH-DRO). The analytical results were below the DERR Initial Screening Level (ISL).
In August 2024, a groundwater sample (P2 TP Sump) was collected from the dewatering sump of the
main excavation. Wasatch was hired to sample the sump water, as it had a product-like sheen. It was
analyzed for (MBTEXN), (TPH-GRO) and (TPH-DRO). The analytical results were below the ISLs.
Side Notes: Gage for Ogden RDA declared they will not spend additional money on this
investigation, but said that building āCā which will overly part of the former 4-UST area,
already has designed into its plans, subgrade ventilation piping and a vapor barrier fabric.
The DERR is welcome to sample.
Google and Wikipedia research by Mark Crim, DERR, shows the original responsible
party (RP) Continental Baking Co./Interstate Brands, went into bankruptcy soon after the
4-USTs were closed in-place in about 1998. Numerous buy-outs and corporate successors
bought and sold the various brand names, like Wonder Bread and Hostess, with a final
successor going bankrupt in 2015. There seems to little chance of finding a viable RP.
