Physical characteristics of the site:
• Moab Base Camp is 41.6 acres in size
• Location is 30 miles from Moab, Utah
• Location is 5.6 from state road 313
• Location is a mix of sandy eolian deposits and residuum derived from sandstone.
• Range is approximately 50’ wide and 55’ deep. The soil berm that surrounds the
range in a u-shape is 8-10’ tall and 12-14’ wide at the base.
Operational history of the site:
Lease was issued to Utah national Parks Council (UNPC) on January 1, 2006. UNPC
used the site to host Scout units for camping activities during June through July. When
hosting Scouts, the ranges were used to shoot .22 long rifles and shotguns. April 1,
2020, the three Boy Scout Councils in Utah merged in to one – Crossroads of the West
Council (CWC). Since 2020, the range sites have not been used. CWC continues to
use the camp for weeklong camps during June and July.
Nature and extent of any relevant contamination:
We expect to find lead contamination at the rifle range (especially the berm) and flat
area used as a shotgun range. Crossroads of the West is not aware of any other
contamination at the site.
Potential for human and environmental exposure to the contamination at the site:
No activities take place at the rifle range and shotgun range. Participants are kept out
of the area when the camp is operating. Throughout the rest of the year the area is
“open land”. No one lives at the site year-round.
