Shelley Executive Director DIVISION OF DRINKING WATER Nathan Lunstad Ph,D Director September 30, 2024 Daren Rigtrup Rigtrup Egg Farm Processing Plant PO BOX 60 Elberta, Utah 84626 Dear Mr. Rigtrup, Subject: RTCR Level 2 Assessment Rigtrup Egg Farm Processing Plant UTAH25179 I would like to thank you and Melanie Johnson for taking the time to meet with me on September 17, 2024, for a Level 2 Assessment (L2) of your water system. Your willingness to accommodate this request is greatly appreciated. Observations: The initiation of this L2 assessment stems from the detection of multiple Total Coliform positive (TC+) results in routine samples, along with repeated revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR) requirements samples, during July 2024. Rigtrup Egg Farm Processing Plant is a Transient Non-Community type water system located in Utah County. The system consists of a Well #5 WS003 and a 16,000 gallon Wet Well (ST001) While performing this L2 assessment it was noticed we looked over the systems bacteriological sample reports and the data is clear that the well source is absent of coliform but once it goes through the tank the system picks up the coliform bacteria. Conclusions: A potential contributor to the presence of Total Coliforms (TC+) in the samples may be a malfunctioning backflow assembly. The backflow assembly between the chicken water tank and the drinking water tank has not been tested. Additionally, the sample line in the back room is supplied by a small copper line located in a very warm environment near the egg wash area. These conditions may facilitate contamination of the samples by dust or other particles from the eggs. Daren Rigtrup Page 2 September 30, 2024 Recommendations: 1. We recommend having all backflow prevention assemblies tested regularly to ensure they are functioning properly and in compliance 2. It is advisable to conduct periodic disinfection and flushing of the tanks and distribution system in accordance with American Water Works Association (AWWA) C651 standards, with a minimum frequency of once per year. 3. Additionally, we suggest collecting water samples from the faucet in the Break Room on the second level, rather than from the warm room near the egg wash area.
