INTRODUCTION In December 2023 Atlas Technical Consultants (Atlas) over saw a microbe and nutrient injection project at the site. The primary objective of the corrective actions was to reduce the petroleum constituent concentrations in the direct vicinity of MW-2 and MW-7 to below Utah Department of Environmental Quality (?UDEQ) Tier I Screening Levels using the BOS-200® Trap-and-Treat technology (BOS-200® Microbial and Nutrient Injection). In February 2024, a post injection groundwater sampling event was conducted. During the event it was discovered that monitoring wells MW-2 and MW -7 were almost completely filled with the BOS 200 slurry. Upon discussion with the UDEQ project manager, MW -2 and MW -7 were abandoned and replaced with wells MW -2R and MW -7R (Monitoring Well Installation Report dated June 18, 2024). On September 9, 2024, Atlas conducted a groundwater sampling event at the site (Figure 1). The sampling was performed on behalf of the Utah Department Environmental Quality, Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR), under Work Assignment LXX-22. FIELD PARAMETER WELL PURGING PROCEDURES AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS The approved Work Plan for Groundwater Monitoring and Reporting included the collection of groundwater elevation data from all monitoring wells and the sampling of monitoring wells MW - 2R, MW -7R, and MW-14. Prior to well purging, groundwater depth was measured in each well using an electronic water level/free product interface probe. No free product was observed in any of the monitoring wells sampled. The water level/free product interface probe was decontaminated between each well with an Alconox detergent wash and tap water rinse. Tesoro #46 GWM Report 09/24 Page 2 ATLAS Following field parameter measurements, the monitoring wells were purged using new, factory- sealed disposable PVC bailers. All the monitoring wells sampled were purged three well casing volumes or until dry. Groundwater removed from the wells was poured on the asphalt surface and allowed to evaporate. After the purging process, the wells were allowed to recharge to within 95 percent of the pre-purge water level before groundwater samples were collected. The samples were transferred to appropriate containers and immediately placed on ice in an insulated cooler and then transported under chain-of-custody documentation to a Utah-certified laboratory for analysis. The groundwater samples were analyzed for methyl t-butyl ether, benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, total xylenes, naphthalene (MBTEXN) using EPA Method 8260; and for TPH as gasoline (TPH-GRO) and TPH as diesel (TPH-DRO) using EPA Method 8015. The September 2024 groundwater elevation data were utilized to prepare a groundwater contour map (Figure 2) for the site. The groundwater elevation data indicate a gradient beneath the site of 0.005 ft/ft to the northwest measured between MW -5 and MW -9. Groundwater elevation data collected from MW-11 and MW -12 were not utilized to construct the groundwater gradient map because they are separated hydrologically form the site due to the presence of a deep underground utility corridor present beneath 3600 West Street. The groundwater elevation data are summarized in Table 1. The September 2024 groundwater analytical data indicate the benzene Tier I Screening Level of 0.30 mg/L was exceeded in MW -7R (0.369 mg/L) and MW -14 (0.635 mg/L). No other petroleum hydrocarbon constituents were measured above their respective Tier 1 Screening Levels in any of the other wells sampled. Benzene was measured in MW -2R at a concentration of 0.164. Benzene has historically been measured above its Tier I Screening Level in MW -1, MW -2 and MW -7. Concentrations of TPH-GRO were detected in all 3 wells sampled. TPH-GRO was measured in MW -2R at a concentration of 1.740 mg/L, in MW -7R and a concentration of 3.500 mg/L, and in MW -14 at a concentration of 3.830 mg/L. Concentrations of TPH-DRO were measured in MW - 2R (0.284 mg/L), MW -7R (1.330 mg/L), and MW-14 (2.960 mg/L). All of the concentrations of TPH-GRO and TPH-DRO measured are below the Tier I Screening Level of 10 mg/L. The laboratory results are summarized in Table 1 and a copy of the laboratory report is included in Appendix A. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Review of the post-injection groundwater laboratory results indicate that the microbe and nutrient injection effort was successful at reducing groundwater impacts in the vicinity of MW -2R and MW -7R since the July 2024 sampling event. However, the September 2024 results indicate an increase in the benzene concentration in MW-7R to above the Tier 1 Screening Level. The results also indicate that the benzene concentration in MW -14 continues to be above the Tier 1 Screening Level. The increased benzene concentration in MW -14 is likely due to the mobilization of impacted groundwater during the injection event. No other petroleum hydrocarbon constituents were measured above their respective Tier 1 Screening Levels in any of the other wells sampled. The September 2024 sampling event is the first under Work Assignment LXX-22. The next sampling event is scheduled for December 2024. This is not intended as a comprehensive explanation, and if you have additional questions please contact your project representative. Results Disclaimer - Information that may be provided by the customer, and contained within this report, include Permit Limits, Project Name, Sample ID, Sample Matrix, Sample Preservation, Field Blanks, Field Spikes, Field Duplicates, On-Site Data, Sampling Collection Dates/Times, and Sampling Location. Results relate to the accuracy of this information provided, and as the samples are received. Abbreviations and Definitions MDL Method Detection Limit. RDL Reported Detection Limit. Rec.Recovery. RPD Relative Percent Difference. SDG Sample Delivery Group. (S) Surrogate (Surrogate Standard) - Analytes added to every blank, sample, Laboratory Control Sample/Duplicate and Matrix Spike/Duplicate; used to evaluate analytical efficiency by measuring recovery. Surrogates are not expected to be detected in all environmental media. U Not detected at the Reporting Limit (or MDL where applicable). Analyte The name of the particular compound or analysis performed. Some Analyses and Methods will have multiple analytes reported. Dilution If the sample matrix contains an interfering material, the sample preparation volume or weight values differ from the standard, or if concentrations of analytes in the sample are higher than the highest limit of concentration that the laboratory can accurately report, the sample may be diluted for analysis. If a value different than 1 is used in this field, the result reported has already been corrected for this factor. Limits These are the target % recovery ranges or % difference value that the laboratory has historically determined as normal for the method and analyte being reported. Successful QC Sample analysis will target all analytes recovered or duplicated within these ranges. Qualifier This column provides a letter and/or number designation that corresponds to additional information concerning the result reported. If a Qualifier is present, a definition per Qualifier is provided within the Glossary and Definitions page and potentially a discussion of possible implications of the Qualifier in the Case Narrative if applicable. Result The actual analytical final result (corrected for any sample specific characteristics) reported for your sample. If there was no measurable result returned for a specific analyte, the result in this column may state “ND” (Not Detected) or “BDL” (Below Detectable Levels). The information in the results column should always be accompanied by either an MDL (Method Detection Limit) or RDL (Reporting Detection Limit) that defines the lowest value that the laboratory could detect or report for this analyte. Uncertainty (Radiochemistry)Confidence level of 2 sigma. Case Narrative (Cn) A brief discussion about the included sample results, including a discussion of any non-conformances to protocol observed either at sample receipt by the laboratory from the field or during the analytical process. If present, there will be a section in the Case Narrative to discuss the meaning of any data qualifiers used in the report. Quality Control Summary (Qc) This section of the report includes the results of the laboratory quality control analyses required by procedure or analytical methods to assist in evaluating the validity of the results reported for your samples. These analyses are not being performed on your samples typically, but on laboratory generated material. Sample Chain of Custody (Sc) This is the document created in the field when your samples were initially collected. This is used to verify the time and date of collection, the person collecting the samples, and the analyses that the laboratory is requested to perform. This chain of custody also documents all persons (excluding commercial shippers) that have had control or possession of the samples from the time of collection until delivery to the laboratory for analysis. Sample Results (Sr) This section of your report will provide the results of all testing performed on your samples. These results are provided by sample ID and are separated by the analyses performed on each sample. The header line of each analysis section for each sample will provide the name and method number for the analysis reported.
