RE:Utah Waste Characterization Study
Dear SALUTATION LAST NAME:
The Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (Division) is excited to announce that the State of Utah was chosen for an U.S. EPA SWIFR (Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling)
Grant. As recipients of this grant, we will be hiring a contractor to conduct a waste characterization study across the State of Utah to fulfill requirements of the Solid and Hazardous
Waste Act, including to “assess the state’s ability to minimize waste and recycle,” and “determine the type of solid waste generated in the state” (Utah Code § 19-6-104(3) and (4)).
You are receiving this letterbecause the FACILITY NAME facility has been selected because of the important input it will provide for the waste characterization study. Within the next
few months, you will be contacted by the contractor to schedule the characterization event, possibly sometime between June and December, 2024. We expect the contractor will be at your
facility for 1-3 days at which time they will be weighing and sorting waste received at the facility. The contractor will need an area to work, and if your facility has a scale, the
contractor may need access to the scale to weigh loads.
We appreciate your cooperation with this important study. For the sake of our environment and the Utah we want future generations to enjoy, we look forward to better understanding thewaste
types generated, and where we can improve in sustainable materials management.
If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Shaw at kellyshaw@utah.govor at385-454-5832.
Sincerely,
Brian Speer, Solid Waste Program Manager
