FIELD OBSERVATIONS:
The Site has recently been sold to Rio Tinto as part of the Kennecott Mine subsidiary. Kennecott plans to
sell the Site for commercial/industrial development. During the Site visit, the Division observed a portion
of the northeast has been sold and developed into a storage facility (Image 1 and 2). The SMP limits
exposure to the groundwater but allows for development of the Site for commercial/industrial land use.
The Division was informed by ATK personnel (who escorted the Division, and recently finalized the sale at
the end of 2023) that the agreement allows for slab on grade development of the Site but restricts
excavation and contact with the contaminated groundwater on-Site. The Division asked for a Kennecott
contact, but ATK did have one. The Site monitoring wells appeared to be intact and the Site is currently
undeveloped with the exception to a railroad through the center of the Site (Image 3), an abandoned
water tower owned by West Valley (Image 4), and the newly constructed storage facility.
