SITE NAME: Mayflower Mine
SITE LOCATION: Wasatch County
DATE OF SITE VISIT: 23 August 2024
PURPOSE OF SITE VISIT: DERR (David Bird) oversight of Phase 1 remedial action.
FIELD OBSERVATIONS: The DERR visited the Mayflower VCP site at ~9:20 am on 23 August to meet with
Extell personnel and their contractors and observe conditions at the site. The DERR met with Extell
(Kent Fawcett and Megan Houdeshel), AGEC (Scott Anderson) and RMEC (Daryl Hancock) to discuss
proposed actions to mitigate differential settling in the western portion of the repository. Removal of
the surcharge material which has been in place on the westernmost portion of the repository was about
90% complete. We observed areas where the western portion of the parking lot is exposed, and
discussed options to further compact the subsidence areas.
AGEC stated that with 20 to 25 feet of surcharge material in place on the repository cover/parking lot
surface for almost one year, it is unlikely any more compaction would be achieved by removal of asphalt
and further efforts to compact the underlying repository material. AGEC did agree to evaluate whether
removal of or pulverizing the asphalt in the low spots of the current repository cover would reduce the
potential for subsurface ponding of water within the repository and what value that might provide.
AGEC expected to have an answer for this by roughly August 28, 2024.
Extell has done the majority of the grading for the stormwater detention pond moved ~100 yards up the
Big Dutch Pete Hollow (BDPH) drainage and away from the repository. Excavation work for the piping
and spillway is next. This is expected to be complete in about 5 weeks.
The DERR left the site at ~11:05 am, but subsequently inspected the east side of the Highway 40 culvert
outlet. Vegetation has grown up enough to obscure the culvert outlet and the Cunningham Tunnel
outlet.
