The groundwater monitoring event was conducted by Wasatch Senior Field Geologist, Jake Scott P.G., on May 9 and 10, 2024. FIELD MEASUREMENTS Depth to groundwater measurements were performed using an electronic oil/water interface probe. Depth to water was measured in monitoring wells MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6, MW-12, MW-13, MW-14, and MW-15. The probe was decontaminated between wells with an Alconox® wash and distilled water rinse. Groundwater and top of free-product elevations were referenced to a 100-foot datum at well MW-2. Summaries of current and previous field measurements are presented in Table 1. No measurable accumulations of free-product were encountered during the May 2024 groundwater monitoring event. The groundwater elevation data were utilized to construct a potentiometric surface map presented as Figure 3. When measurable accumulations of free-product are encountered, depth to groundwater and groundwater elevations are corrected for the wells exhibiting measurable free-product. The potentiometric map indicates that the direction of groundwater flow is generally to the southeast. The average hydraulic gradient; calculated as a three-point problem using monitoring wells MW-5, MW-12, and MW-15; was approximately 0.024 feet/foot. The average potentiometric surface increased by approximately 0.43 feet since the November 2023 groundwater monitoring event. GROUNDWATER SAMPLING METHODS Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-3, MW-5, MW-13, and MW-14 after purging the wells of a minimum of three well bore volumes using a new disposable bailer and allowing the wells to recharge. Monitoring wells MW-6, MW-12, and MW-15 were bailed dry, and were allowed to recharge to a minimum of 90% of their initial water level before they were sampled using a new disposable bailer. Monitoring well locations are shown on Figure 2. Groundwater samples from each of the monitoring wells were collected and dispensed into four preserved, 40-milliliter, glass vials equipped with Teflon® septa caps. The vials, which were supplied by the analytical laboratory, contained several drops of hydrochloric acid as a preservative. The vials were filled slowly until a meniscus formed at the top of each vial, then each vial was sealed with a septa cap. Wasatch Environmental, Inc. 2 This procedure eliminates headspace within the vials and minimizes the loss of volatiles. The sample vials were each labeled with the analysis required, samplers name, sample identification, sample location, date, and time of sample collection. The samples were placed in a cooler with ice and transported under chain-of-custody protocol to Chemtech-Ford (CTF), a Utah-certified laboratory, for analysis. All purge water generated during the groundwater monitoring activities was poured over the pavement near the monitoring well locations. No measurable free-product was detected on the influent or the effluent side of the oil/water separator. A water sample was collected from the effluent side of the oil/water separator and submitted to CTF for analysis. GROUNDWATER SAMPLING ANALYTICAL RESULTS The groundwater samples collected from the monitoring wells and the oil/water separator were transported under chain-of-custody to CTF for analysis of methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, naphthalene (MBTEXN), total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline - range organics (TPH-GRO) using United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) method 8260D, and total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel-range organics (TPH-DRO) using U.S. EPA Method 8015C. The laboratory analytical report and chain-of-custody documentation are attached in Appendix A. Analytical results are summarized in Table 2. Analytical results for all monitoring locations, except for monitoring well MW-6, have been compared to Interim Cleanup Levels (ICLs) that have been established for the site. Because monitoring well MW-6 is located at the eastern property boundary, analytical results for this well have been compared to Utah Initial Screening Levels (ISLs). Benzene concentrations that exceed ed the ICL of 0.005 milligrams per liter (mg/L) were detected in groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-12 (0.165 mg/L), MW-13 (0.054 mg/L), MW-14 (0.834 mg/L), and MW-15 (0.034 mg/L). When compared to historical benzene concentrations, since the horizontal trench soil vapor extraction (HT SVE) / density-driven convection (DDC) system was shut down in December 2004, benzene concentrations in groundwater appear to be stable to slowly decreasing. Benzene concentrations in groundwater are depicted in Figure 4. No groundwater samples contained TPH-GRO at concentrations exceeding the ICL or Utah ISL for TPH- GRO. TPH-GRO concentrations in the monitoring wells at this site have generally been stable to slowly decreasing since December 2004. TPH-DRO exceeded the Utah ISL of 1 mg/L in the groundwater sample collected from MW-6 (22.8 mg/L) and exceeded the ICL of 10 mg/L in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-13 (123 mg/L). No other groundwater samples contained TPH-DRO at concentrations exceeding the ICL for TPH- DRO. TPH-DRO concentrations at the site appear to be generally stable to slowly decreasing. TPH- DRO concentrations in groundwater are depicted in Figure 5. The laboratory analytical results revealed that none of the groundwater samples collected from any of the monitoring wells contained toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, naphthalene, or MTBE at concentrations above their applicable ICLs or Utah ISLs. The sample collected from the oil/water separator effluent exhibited a TPH-DRO concentration of 10.0 mg/L, which meets the ICL for TPH-DRO of 10 mg/L. No other analytes were detected in this sample at concentrations above their applicable ICLs. FREE-PRODUCT ABATEMENT On May 9 and 10, 2024, prior to collecting groundwater samples, Wasatch checked for free-product and the condition of the absorbent socks in monitoring wells MW-2, MW-4, MW-13, and MW-14. Wasatch Environmental, Inc. 3 The groundwater in monitoring well MW-2 exhibited a petroleum hydrocarbon odor. The absorbent sock in monitoring well MW-2 was 100% saturated with free-product. The absorbent sock from monitoring well MW-2 was discarded, and a new absorbent sock was deployed after the sampling was completed. The groundwater in monitoring well MW-4 exhibited a petroleum hydrocarbon odor. The absorbent sock in monitoring well MW-4 was 50% saturated with free-product. The absorbent sock in monitoring well MW-4 was inverted and redeployed after the sampling was completed. The groundwater in monitoring well MW- 13 exhibited a strong petroleum hydrocarbon odor and an oily sheen. The absorbent sock was 20% saturated with free-product. The absorbent sock in monitoring well MW-13 was inverted and redeployed after the sampling was completed. The groundwater in monitoring well MW-14 exhibited a petroleum hydrocarbon odor and an oily sheen. The absorbent sock was 20% saturated with free-product. The absorbent sock in monitoring well MW-14 was inverted and redeployed after the sampling was completed. OIL/WATER SEPARATOR OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The oil/water separator was cleaned out using a vacuum truck on November 2, 2023. The next service event is scheduled for November of 2024. Summary of Oil/Water Separator Service Date of Service Inspected? Cleaned? Volume of Fluid Removed July 2008 Yes No None November 2008 Yes Yes 450 gallons of sludge and water May 2013 Yes No None October 2013 Yes Yes ~200 gallons of sludge, ~100 gallons of free-product December 2014 Yes Yes ~1,000 gallons of sludge and water November 2015 Yes Yes ~850 gallons of sludge and water, ~2 gallons of free-product November 2016 Yes Yes ~880 gallons of sludge and water November 2017 Yes Yes ~1,290 gallons of sludge and water November 2018 Yes Yes ~1,560 gallons of sludge and water November 2019 Yes Yes ~1,470 gallons of sludge and water November 2020 Yes Yes ~1,470 gallons of sludge and water November 2021 Yes Yes ~925 gallons of sludge and water November 2022 Yes Yes ~900 gallons of sludge and water November 2023 Yes Yes ~800 gallons of sludge and water RECOMMENDATIONS The oil/water separator should continue to be periodically cleaned out using a vacuum truck, and the waste properly disposed. Cleaning with a vacuum truck should be performed annually. As free-product remains at the site, and appears to be highly weathered, the free-product is not likely to be remediated by either DDC or HTSVE and may be spread around the site by running the DDC system. Restarting the remediation systems at this time would not be advisable. Free-product removal efforts will continue using absorbent socks in affected monitoring wells, with semi- annual sock monitoring by Wasatch personnel. In addition, if appreciable amounts of free-product are encountered during sampling events, the free-product will be pumped or bailed out and disposed appropriately. The next groundwater monitoring event is scheduled for November 2024. At the request of the Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR), Wasatch is currently scoping additional subsurface investigation work to support risk-based closure of the release.
