The Wasatch Drain -l'unnel supplies most oiour water and can be pumped to any customer in our district including the tlidden Peak water treatment plant and reservoir. -fhe Peruvian mine tunnel and Peruvian Spring source. located high rn Peruvian Gulch supplies the Blackjack and Sugarplum areas. During the summer months extra water fiom this source supplements the Wasatch Drain lunnel and supplies the Snowbird Resort. SOURCE PROTECTION Salt LakeCountv Service Area#3 updated its Drinking WaterSource Protection Plan in2023. It isavailable tbr y-our review. It contains information about our source protection zones. potential contamination sources. and management strategies to protect our drinking water. Additionally" the Peruvian lVIine Tunnel and Peruvian Spring source are located in a remote location. with one potential contamination source in their protection zone. so we consider it to have a low susceptibilit-v level to potcntial contamination events. MONITORING PERIOD Salt Lake County Service Area # 3 routinely monitors for constituents in -vour drinking water according to Federal and State laws. I'he table below shows the results of our monitoring tbr the period of January l" to December 3li.2023.All drinkingwater, includingbottled drinkingwater.ma)bereasonablyexpectedtocontainatleastsmall amounts of some constituents. It's important to remember that the presence of these constituents does not necessarily pose a health risk. ln order to ensure that tap water is sale to drink. EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in the water provrded b1 public water s)stems. FDA regulations establish Iimits fbr contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection fbr human health. DEFINITIONS In the fbllowing table -,-,ou will find man.v terms and abbreviations you might not be familiar with. To help .vou better understand these terms we've provided the following definition Non-Detects (ND) - laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present. ND/Low - High - F or water svstems that have multiple sources of water. the Utah Division of Drinking Water has given water systems the optron of listing the test results of the constituents in one table. instead of multiple tables. To accomplish this. the lowest and hrghest values detected in the multiple sources are recorded in the same space in the report table. Pam per mittion (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (nq/l) - one part per million corresponds to one minute in tuo rears or a single penny in $10.000. Parr per billion (ppb) or lllicrograms per liter (ug/l) - one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2.000 years. or a single penny in $ l 0.000.000. Millirems per year (mrem/yr) - measure of radiation absorbed by the body. Million Fiben per Liter (MFL) - milhon fibers per liter is a measure of the presence of asbestos fibers that are longer than I0 micrometers. Nephelometic Turbidity Unit (NTU) - nephelometric turbidity unit is a measure of the clarity oi water. Turbidity in excess of5 NTU isjust noticeable to the average person. Action Level (.4L) - the concentration ofa contaminant which. ifexceeded. triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow. Trearment Technique (fD - A treatment technique is a required process intended to reduce the level ofa contaminant rn drinking waler. MaximumContaminant Level (MCL) - The ''Marimum Allowed" (MCL) is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as leasible using the best available treatment technology. Marimum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) - The "Goal" (MCLG) is the level of a contaminant in drinking water belowwhichthereisno knownorexpectedrisktohealth. MCLGsallowforamarginofsafery*. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL) - The highest level oia disinlectant allowed in drinking water. RADON We constantly monitorthe watersupply fbrvarious constituents. We have detected radon in the tlnished watersupply of the Wasatch Drain Tunnel in I out of I samples tested. lhere is no f-ederal regulation for radon levels in drinking water. Exposure to air transmittcd radon over a long pertod of time may-, cause adverse health effects. Radon is a radioactive gas which is naturally occurrrng in some ground water. It poses a lung cancer risk when the gas is released from your water into the arr (as occurs during showering. bathing. or washing dishes or clothes). and a stomach cancer risk when you drink water containing radon. Radon gas released f'rom drinking r.later is a relatively small part ofthe total radon in air. Other sources are radon gas from soil which enters homes through foundations. and radon inhaled directly while smoking cigarettes. Experts are not sure exactl!' what the cancer risk is lrom a given level ol radon in your drinking water. GIARDIA and CRYPTOSPORIDIUM We are required to test our sourccs of drinking watcr. as well as our treated tap water. fbr the presence olCr-lptosporidium. These organisms include bacteria. viruses. and parasites that can cause slmptoms such as nausea- cramps. diarrhea and associated headaches PFAS Perfluoroalky'ls and Polyfluoroalkyls are manut-actured chemicals that have been used in various products since the 1940s. l'hey are primarily'used in stain and water-resistant materials" cleaning products. paints. and firefighting foams. These substances. which make up a very diverse group oithousands ofditlerent chemicals have been shown to cause severe effects in various ecosystems and the health ol' humans. Due to these impacts the EPA is implementing new drinking water treatment requirements tbr this chemical group. Nationwrde testing for these lorever chemicals is ongoing and will provide better data on the extent to which PI-AS has contaminated surlace and groundwater reservoirs. L ittle Cottonwood Cany on and lhe state o f Utah more broadl.v are predicted to be low on the scale of contamination lvhen compared to eastern states and more rndustrial regions of the country.
