Dear Mr. Hess:
The Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility (SLVSWMF) is planning to abandon the leachate riser located
in the south-central portion of Module 5 as part of the ongoing Module 8 construction project. The construction
plans for Module 8, approved by Salt Lake City Engineering in March 2023, call for the abandonment of the Module
5 leachate riser, as leachate generated in Module 5 will flow into the leachate sump in Module 8 via newly installed
piping. The plans do not provide detail for the abandonment, therefore, Kleinfelder has been asked to provide this 'I•'·' letter requesting approval of the Module 5 abandonment methodology.
Figure 1 provides a schematic of the Module 5 leachate riser and shows the proposed abandonment methodology
for the Module 5 leachate riser. In short, the high-density polyethylene (HOPE) riser pipe will be cut off at the
ground surface. Subsequently, the void space within the remaining HDPE riser pipe and the annular space between
the inner and outer casing will be filled with ¾-inch washed gravel and then covered with a geotextile filter fabric
(Mirafi N-Series or an equivalent product). The filter fabric will extend laterally beyond the-riser pipe and will be
secured with stakes to prevent shifting. Finally, two feet of clay will be placed over the filter fabric and wheel
comp acted to reduce the likelihood of damage to the remaining HDPE riser pipe and also to reduce methane
emissions. This abandonment process will facilitate future waste placement as Modules 5 and 8 are filled.
