Regulatory Status of Demilitarization Projects
A review of your 28 July 1993 correspondence regarding the regulatory status of demilitarization
projects as discussed in the 22 July 1993 meeting has been completed. The following
determinations have been made conceming the regulatory status:
1. Solid Rocket Motor Disposal (SRMD) Project
Cutting off the fiberglass dome of a Minuteman rocket motor will not be
considered as hazardous waste treatment. When the rocket motor dome is
removed, the rocket motor will become a hazardous waste.
Documentation should be provided regarding the necessity of the aging and
surveillance project to investigate propellant cracks and the requisite "coining"
operations. Please submit a copy of the Air Force aging and surveillance project
authorization to investigate propellant cracks. Upon completion of the
investigation the "coins" and motors will become a hazardous waste.
Printed on recycled paper
2. C3 Motor Disassembly
The Navy C3 second stage motors will become a hazardous waste when the
igniters and bracketry have been removed.
If you have any questions, please contact Ed Deputy at 538-6170.
Sincerely,
iennis R. Downs, Executive Secretary
