RE: Solid Waste Management Unit #681 Assessment Report
ATK Launch Systems – Promontory Facility
UTD009081357
Dear Mr. Gooch:
The Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control has completed its review of ATK’s
Assessment Report and response to comments for SWMU #681. This SWMU originated from the
release of process water containing perchlorate from the M-705 Wastewater Treatment Facility. ATK
notified the Division of this SWMU and then submitted an Assessment Report for it in accordance with
the Post-Closure Permit.
Based on ATK’s responses to Division comments on the SWMU Assessment Report and the additional
information that was submitted on the pre-construction soil borings and additional Hydrus Model run,
ATK has adequately addressed the concerns regarding the potential for the release to impact
groundwater.
As ATK stated in the SWMU Notification, no corrective action was taken at the site since the process
water was released beneath building M-705. Therefore, this site remains a SWMU and needs to be
added to the SWMU database. The Division is currently working with ATK on updating how the
database is maintained. ATK has requested that the SWMUs at Promontory be tracked the same way
they are at Bacchus. It is recommended that the SWMU be added to the database after the Permit is
modified to implement this change.
